Terrance the Flying Eyeball is complete!

Howdy all,

Thanks for viewing the Development Log for my first Unity game, Terrance the Flying Eyeball.
I've been working on the game full time for about 2 months now, during the summer holiday in between university semesters. I've only just posted this thread now, as I only just discovered this cool website!

In this game, you play as a disembodied eyeball, called Terrance, who must complete a set of dangerous challenges involving bouncing off surfaces, breaking glass tubes, and dodging plasma projectiles, in order to feel content and satisfied with life.

This is a sidescroller that focuses on bounce physics and projectile dodging - encouraging the player to decide between fast or safe! I'm designing the game to convey all mechanics through level design (without any explicit instructions).

At the moment I'm currently in the process of building more levels and coding the last few mechanics. I'm working on it pretty much full time (I'm also teaching myself to code in C++ on the side), and hope to have the game finished within the next few weeks.

I'm be the releasing the game to play for free, either in your web browser, or as a downloadable file.

Thanks for reading  Grin

Kick ass idea board!

Thanks man!

Although less than 5% of the stuff on the board is actually making it into the final game xD

Here's a screenshot showing the introduction to button-based gameplay. I'm still not sure if I'm entirely happy with the button graphics, so there's a good chance they might change?

Seriously, do you guys reckon that they look like buttons?

Screenshot showing some basic button-laser gameplay.

This mechanic took longer than I expected to tweak to exactly the way I wanted it (mostly because of audio), and I still have some work to do on the colours. I'm happy how this has turned out though Smiley

Screenshot showing advanced laser-button gameplay.
It took me a while to tweak the sound effects and laser flicker effect, but I'm glad how it's turned out :D

You definitely should! It's really fun to see the board slowly fill up with your creative juices (that sounded less creepy in my head).
Even if a bunch of it doesn't make it into the final game it feels great to get some of it down on paper as it's a lot quicker than the speed at which you actually implement the stuff into the game.

Actually I might make a thread to see if anyone else has photos of their idea boards to share  Grin

In case anyone's wondering why I haven't set this game to "100% complete", I'm still going to implement a few updates over the next few days based on some of the feedback I've received on launch. Nothing that effects the gameplay specifically, just a few UI and preference alterations.

Played and beat it, it's cute Smiley you did a good job of introducing new elements and utilizing them in new ways. You did a good job of demonstrating the mechanics through level design, like you wanted to! Nice story too ;p

A few presentation suggestions: Did you try detaching the background from the game field? Basically, making it so that the background always appears to be moving the same amount whether or not the player is horizontally moving the camera. It might make it easier on the eyes... usually when I have a scrolling background and a moving camera, I make it so the background isn't altered by the camera.

Also, at some point in the development did you try making the camera fix to the player instead of ease along? I got used to it but at first the combination of the lagged easing in the camera, the moving background and the player's motion felt a little overwhelming.

I like it a lot though, good job and can't wait to see what you make in the future!

Good work on getting your game finished! I didn't play it, but the screenshots make it look very messy and hard to follow. Mainly I think there are too many colours and lines and the background is too noisy.

Here I've changed the background by reducing the contrast, making it all one hue, and I think I made it lighter too. I would have avoided using fully saturated colours too, as they are quite eye-burny. Anyways, there's my 2c. Smiley

I would like to test it, but I didn't find a download link. :\

Or Did I misunderstand my previous posters?
