A suicide car bomber has killed 12 people in an attack aimed at African Union troops in Somalia, an official has said. A car laden with explosives was rammed into an AU convoy travelling south-west of the capital, Mogadishu, said local governor Adukadir Mohamed Sidi.

This is the first attack since militant Islamist group al-Shabab vowed to avenge the killing of its leader Ahmed Abdi Godane last week. He was killed in a US air strike. Monday’s attack took place on the road between Mogadishu and Afgoye town, some 30km (19 miles) from the capital.

Engineered bacteria produce biofuel alternative for high-energy rocket fuel

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Joint BioEnergy Institute have engineered a bacterium to synthesize pinene, a hydrocarbon produced by trees that could potentially replace high-energy fuels, such as JP-10, in missiles and other aerospace applications. With improvements in process efficiency, the biofuel could supplement limited supplies of petroleum-based JP-10, and might also facilitate development of a new generation of more powerful engines.

By inserting enzymes from trees into the bacterium, first author and Georgia Tech graduate student Stephen Sarria, working under the guidance of assistant professor Pamela Peralta-Yahya, boosted pinene production six-fold over earlier bioengineering efforts. Though a more dramatic improvement will be needed before pinene dimers can compete with petroleum-based JP-10, the scientists believe they have identified the major obstacles that must be overcome to reach that goal.

Funded by Georgia Tech startup funds awarded to Peralta-Yahya's lab and by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, the research was reported February 27, 2014, in the journal ACS Synthetic Biology.

"We have made a sustainable precursor to a tactical fuel with a high energy density," said Peralta-Yahya, an assistant professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech. "We are concentrating on making a 'drop-in' fuel that looks just like what is being produced from petroleum and can fit into existing distribution systems."

Fuels with high energy densities are important in applications where minimizing fuel weight is important. The gasoline used to power automobiles and the diesel used mainly in trucks both contain less energy per liter than the JP-10. The molecular arrangement of JP-10, which includes multiple strained rings of carbon atoms, accounts for its higher energy density.

The amount of JP-10 that can be extracted from each barrel of oil is limited, and sources of potentially comparable compounds such as trees can't provide much help. The limited supply drives the price of JP-10 to around $25 per gallon. That price point gives researchers working on a biofuel alternative a real advantage over scientists working on replacing gasoline and diesel.

"If you are trying to make an alternative to gasoline, you are competing against $3 per gallon," Peralta-Yahya noted. "That requires a long optimization process. Our process will be competitive with $25 per gallon in a much shorter time."

While much research has gone into producing ethanol and bio-diesel fuels, comparatively little work has been done on replacements for the high-energy JP-10.

Peralta-Yahya and collaborators set out to improve on previous efforts by studying alternative enzymes that could be inserted into the E. coli bacterium. They settled on two classes of enzymes – three pinene synthases (PS) and three geranyl diphosphate synthases (GPPS) – and experimented to see which combinations produced the best results.

Their results were much better than earlier efforts, but the researchers were puzzled because for a different hydrocarbon, similar enzymes produced more fuel per liter. So they tried an additional step to improve their efficiency. They placed the two enzymes adjacent to one another in the E. coli cells, ensuring that molecules produced by one enzyme would immediately contact the other. That boosted their production to 32 milligrams per liter – much better than earlier efforts, but still not competitive with petroleum-based JP-10.

Peralta-Yahya believes the problem now lies with built-in process inhibitions that will be more challenging to address.

"We found that the enzyme was being inhibited by the substrate, and that the inhibition was concentration-dependent," she said. "Now we need either an enzyme that is not inhibited at high substrate concentrations, or we need a pathway that is able to maintain low substrate concentrations throughout the run. Both of these are difficult, but not insurmountable, problems."

To be competitive, the researchers will have to boost their production of pinene 26-fold. Peralta-Yahya says that's within the range of possibilities for bioengineering the E. coli.

"Even though we are still in the milligrams per liter level, because the product we are trying to make is so much more expensive than diesel or gasoline means that we are relatively closer," she said.

Theoretically, it may be possible to produce pinene at a cost lower than that of petroleum-based sources. If that can be done – and if the resulting bio-fuel operates well in these applications – that could open the door for lighter and more powerful engines fueled by increased supplies of high-energy fuels. Pinene dimers, which result from the dimerization of pinene, have already been shown to have an energy density similar to that of JP-10.

Co-authors from the Joint BioEnergy Institute included Betty Wong, Hector Garcia Martin and Professor Jay D. Keasling, co-corresponding author of the paper.

22-Year-Old Woman Gets World’s First 3-D Printed Skull

A 22-year-old Dutch woman recently underwent a revolutionary procedure where she received a 3-D printed skull, which surgeons say was a world first.

The patient suffered from a condition where her own skull thickened, putting pressure on the brain, according to NL Times. The woman’s symptoms became so bad she was beginning to lose her ability to make facial expressions and it was only going to get worse, possibly leading to death.

Applying 3-D printing technology into the medical field has given doctors the ability to custom fit patients with replacement body parts — in this case a plastic skull.

The procedure was conducted at the University Medical Center Utrecht a few months ago and has since been proclaimed a success as the woman is already back at work, Dutch News reported.

“The patient has regained her capacity for facial expression, is free of complaints, is back to work and it is nearly impossible to see she was ever operated on,” Bon Verweij, the lead surgeon, told NL Times.

Nigeria wants return of Abacha assets frozen by US

Assets worth $458 million stolen by former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and frozen by the United States should ultimately be returned to Nigeria, the country's justice minister said on Wednesday.

The US has said the funds held in various European accounts were the "proceeds of corruption" during Abacha's iron-fisted military rule in Africa's most populous country between 1993 and 1998.

Nigeria had not previously commented on the asset freeze, which the US Justice Department said was "the largest civil forfeiture action to recover the proceeds of foreign official corruption" it had ever brought.

But in a statement, Nigeria's Justice Minister Mohammed Adoke said it applauded "the efforts of the United States to recover the (funds) for the benefit of the people of Nigeria".

Adoke said his office was cooperating with Washington's legal efforts against Abacha's relatives and associates, which could result in the permanent forfeiture of all the money.

"The overall objective of these efforts is to ensure that Nigeria as the Victim State is able to have the forfeited assets repatriated," Adoke said.

Nigeria "will do all that is required to realise this objective", he added. The US Justice Department did not specify what actions would be taken with regard to the Abacha funds when the seizure was announced on March 5.

The US government's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative "where appropriate" provides for the return of stolen proceeds "to benefit the people harmed by these acts of corruption and abuse of office".

Civilian rule was restored in Nigeria a year after Abacha's sudden death in 1998 but corruption has persisted and even worsened, according to some experts.

The repatriation of the Abacha funds directly into Nigeria's coffers would likely spark criticism among civil society leaders who claim the government cannot be trusted to spend money on public services.

Nigeria is Africa's top oil producer but most of its roughly 170 million people live on less than $2 a day and despite the abundant energy resources electricity supply remains woeful.

Federal government constitutes committee for recruitment into NIS, others

photo: NIS recruitment Day

Federal Government on Wednesday, constituted a Presidential Committee to re-conduct the aborted recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The presidency also mandated the committee to also assist the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Fire Service and other para-military agencies in future recruitment exercises.

It would be recalled that authorities at the Minister of Interior, Presided over by the Minister, Abba Moro, had allegedly conducted recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service, recently, but the exercise resulted in tragedy as a result of stampede which also claimed the lives of some of the applicants.

In a statement by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, in Abuja, those appointed into the committee include Federal Civil Service Commission as Chairman.

Other members of the committee are Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service, a representative of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, representative of the Commandant-General NSCDC, representative of the Comptroller, Prison Service, representative of the Corp Marshal Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a representative of the Director-General, Department of State Securities(DSS) while Permanent Secretary, Special Duties (OSGF) would serve as secretary.

Part of the terms of reference for the Committee would be to liaise with the Civil Defence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prisons Board and confirm the actual number of personnel to be recruited.

The Committee would also assist the Civil Defence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prisons Board by re-advertising the recruitment into the NIS with a view to starting the recruitment process afresh.

They would also assist the Civil Defence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prisons Board by processing the applications, short listing potential candidates and conducting the necessary interviews for the purpose of the recruitment exercise;

Including assisting the Civil Defence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prisons Board by following all relevant laws, public service rules and guidelines, to determine successful applicants and announce their appointment into the NIS.

KANO KILLINGS!! 100 DIE IN COMMUNAL CLASH

Dozens of gunmen on motorbikes have killed more than 100 villagers in an ongoing conflict over land in northern Nigeria, survivors said on Thursday.

The attacks, which began on Tuesday night, left scores of people fleeing on foot from the four targeted villages about 180 kilometres south of Katsina city.

People were still burying victims at Marabar Kindo village when the attackers returned on Thursday afternoon and gunned down another seven villagers, said resident Adamu Inuwa. They also set fire to thatch-roofed huts, said Mr Inuwa.

Kabiru Ismail of Maigora village said the first raid came late on Tuesday and residents were continuing to recover bodies on Thursday of people who had fled into the bush with the gunmen in pursuit.

Reached by telephone on Thursday morning, Mr Ismail said he had helped bury more than 40 people. By late afternoon, he said he had counted 103 bodies in three of the four villages.

The chief imam of Maigora said two policemen responding to calls for help were among the dead. He and Mr Ismail also said two men in military uniform were among the attackers.

For months, the area has been terrorised by raids blamed on semi-nomadic Fulani herders attacking Hausa farmers. Both are Muslim.

Most Fulani-related violence in Nigeria is concentrated around central Plateau state, where Muslim herders are pitted against Christian farmers. Thousands have been killed in recent years.

Such conflicts - a mix of tribal and religious animosity aggravated by growing rivalries over land by cattle herders and farmers - are unrelated to an Islamic uprising concentrated mainly in the northeast of Nigeria in which militants also have killed thousands of civilians.

Villagers attacked this week noted that in past raids in Katsina state the herders stole their belongings and especially cattle and sheep.

"This time they just killed people," Mr Ismail said. "It's as if their mission is to wipe out entire villages."

China and Japan on the brink of Third World War

Against this background, a dispute over five uninhabited
islands and three barren rocks looks increasingly
dangerous.
China views the “nationalisation” of what it calls the
Diaoyu Islands by the Japanese in 2012 as a serious
provocation and will do whatever is necessary to assert its
sovereignty.
Japan, meanwhile, which calls the territory the Senkaku
Islands, is using an ever increasing number of naval ships
and warplanes to guard them and is trying to involve the
US.
If war were to break out, the US is bound by treaty to come
to the aid of Japan.
President Barack Obama has already reaffirmed his
recognition of Japan exercising its administrative rights
over the Senkaku Islands.

US says NIgeria is corrupt.....?? We all know that.

Nigeria has been classified as a corrupt country with a poor
governance record, while discrimination against women,
the less privileged, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) people is common place.
This is coming on the heels of the disclosure by the
Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Mr.
Emeka Ezeh that N95.79 billion was saved through the
implementation of due diligence in public contracting and
procurement in the fourth quarter of last year.
United States Secretary of State, John Kerry made the
corruption allegations on Thursday in his well- advertised
“Country Reports on Human Rights Practices” which he
presented at the Press Briefing Room of the State
Department in Washington.
Kerry warned that the US was not acting out of arrogance
but to plug the pitfalls arising from its experiment at home
and help the human race against making avoidable
mistakes.
“Even as we come together today to issue a report on other
nations, we hold ourselves to a high standard and we
expect accountability here at home too. And we know that
we’re not perfect. We don’t speak with any arrogance
whatsoever, but with a concern for the human condition,”
the Secretary of State said.
This year’s report, he stressed, “is especially timely coming
on the heels of one of the most momentous years in the
struggle for greater rights and freedoms in modern history.”

In my own opinion, this shouldn't come as a shock to any Nigerian out there. Putting the records straight, Nigeria is corrupt especially in governance.

Court stands firm on its decision not to reinstall Sanusi as CBN governor

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the federal high court yesterday has refused the ex parte motion
brought before it by Sanusi on the grounds that it would be
unfair to grant such an application without affording the
respondents a hearing.
Sanusi had filed the application on Monday asking the court
to make an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the
defendants from obstructing, disturbing, stopping or
preventing him in any manner whatsoever, from performing
the functions as the governor of the CBN and enjoying in
full, the statutory powers and privileges attached to the
office.
Urging the court to expeditiously grant his interlocutory
application, he maintained that any delay might cause
irreparable and serious damage and mischief on him in the
exercise of his statutory duties as the CBN governor.
But Justice Gabriel Kolawole in refusing the application
said he was of the view that the court had not only the
judicial powers to declare the suspension unlawful, but to
order that the plaintiff be returned to perform his duties as
the governor of the CBN.

Exposed!!! Eto is 39 yrs and not 32....ex wife says

A former lover of Chelsea footballer Samuel Eto’o has
accused the striker for being seven years older than he
claims to be.
The allegation comes after Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho
said Eto’o was probably older than 32.
‘The problem with Chelsea is I lack a scorer,’ said
Mourinho.
‘I have Eto’o but he is 32 years old, maybe 35, who knows?’
Now the footballer’s ex Anna Barranca has joined the
debate saying: ‘I think Samuel is not 35 he is more 39.
‘Samuel was born in 1974 and so that makes him 39 now.’
The Italian hairdresser says she was informed of the sport
stars true age by a friend who grew up with Eto’o in
Cameroon, west Africa.
A Chelsea source said Eto’o’s passport clearly states that
the footballer is 32.
Ms Barranca, 43, is the mother of his child Annie.

waoh!! underwear (bra and pant ) that goes for £500,000)

The flashy two-piece is made of 3 kilograms of the precious metal - and would set you back more than half a million

pounds. But unfortunately for wealthy fashionistas, the underwear set has been produced as a work of art and is not for sale. Today, a model showed off the dazzling lingerie (left) at a gold shop in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province. She was joined by two other models (one of whom is pictured right), whom posed with glittering gold accessories, including necklaces, a shoe and a rabbit.

can you buy this??
