   The iPhone 6 which is soon to come will be great competition for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Here we have a comparison between the two to figure out which one would actually be the best choice since both are amazing flagships for their companies.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is ruling the tech market right now, no other device being quite like it: the device comes with amazing specs that are just daring every other company to come with a worthy opponent. Unfortunately for Samsung, Apple is in the making of a revolutionary handset as well which will at least be as sold as Samsung. We keep hearing great news about the iPhone 6, but let’s see which one is actually better when it comes to specs and price.

The iPhone 6 has yet to be released, most people expecting Apple to release their new flagship somewhere in September or October (seeing how most of its past smartphones hit the market in that period of the year). The Samsung Galaxy S5 appeared on the market on April 11th this year, which makes it relatively new and exciting.

There is no official statement about what price tag will be on the iPhone 6, but as we know Apple, it will be most likely more expensive than the Galaxy S5. Right now, the smallest price the Samsung Galaxy S5 can be found at is $583.00. 

Samsung made this device even more affordable, seeing how the Galaxy S4, after two months of being on the market, was more expensive than is the Galaxy S5 right now.

There aren’t many leaks about the iPhone 6 will bring to the table, but we are sure that the device will come as a competition for the S5. What we can tell you is that Samsung equipped its handset with a Super AMOLED display measuring 5.1 inches and that can render a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The device is powered by a Krait 400 processor (quad core working at 2.5 GHz) which is paired up with a Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AC chipset from Qualcomm. The Galaxy S5 can be purchased with two options of internal storage: 16 GB and 32 GB (by using a microSD card, you can expand this memory by up to 128 GB).

 The battery unit housed on this smartphone has a capacity of 2800 mAh which is estimated to last 21 hours of talking time.

 Other interesting features that Samsung brought with this device are the fingerprint scanner and the heart-beat sensor.

 The iPhone 6 does promise to come with revolutionary technology, so we’ll just have to wait to see if it is a match for the South Korean flagship.

The operating system is also an aspect we have to cover.

Considering that the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS was just released by Google and it was not available in April, the Galaxy S5 does come with the best option of operating system: the Android KitKat. We are sure that Samsung will make available an upgrade to the new OS. As for the iPhone 6, this one will probably have iOS 8.

Now, since we don’t have full details about the iPhone 6, we have to say that the Samsung Galaxy S5 can still enjoy its success because it is an exquisite smartphone. If you’re patient enough to wait for the iPhone 6, Apple’s device is probably excellent as well, so it’s just a matter of taste which one you choose.

Samsung Fails to Launch its Tizen-based Smartphone in Moscow, Unsure of New Launch Date

Samsung once again gets cold feet when launching a Tizen smartphone

General consumers haven’t had much experience with Samsung’s Tizen mobile operating system. Tizen is currently shipping on Samsung’s Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches (the company also offered a Tizen OS upgrade for the original Galaxy Gear). However, most are awaiting the release of Tizen on the high-profile smartphone stage.

That moment was supposed to happen yesterday at a launch event held in Moscow for Tizen developers. However, Samsung backed out of its plans for launching the Samsung Z in Russia. Instead, Samsung issued a statement, which read in part, “the smartphone will appear on the Russian market later, when we can offer our users a fullest portfolio of applications.”

For developers that are actually trying to embrace the Tizen platform, this was definitely a setback, and likely not very encouraging. After all, this is the second time that Samsung has botched the launch of a Tizen-backed smartphone. Earlier this year, Samsung cancelled plans to launch a Tizen smartphone in Japan just days before it was supposed to go on sale.

But while the Samsung Z didn’t launch at the Moscow event, Samsung execs were on hand to extol the virtues of using Tizen. However, even company execs weren’t exactly brimming with optimism, with Samsung’s Dmitry Anosov stating, “The most obvious advantage [of developing for the Tizen phone] is that you’ll be at the top in a half empty store on a decent premium device.”

That “decent premium device” is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel processor (paired with 2GB of RAM) and includes a 4.8” 720p display. Other features include 16GB of storage space, a microSD slot for storage expansion, an 8MP rear camera, front-facing 2MP camera, and a fingerprint sensor. When Samsung first announced the smartphone in early June, marketing chief DJ Lee said that the Samsung Z would allow the company to “[Enhance] the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs.” However, it now looks as though consumers will have to wait for an undetermined length of time to get their hands on Tizen. With no concrete date set for the Samsung Z’s launch, developers are still trying to stay optimistic. “Think of the potential Samsung can give you in a new store and the profit you could be making, while in the iOS and Android stores, your app would be drowning,” said Denis Khitrov, who is the COO for MedM. “If this train starts moving, there may be no stopping it.” Well, it’s time for Samsung to release the parking brake.

Facebook’s mobile ad network is shockingly unambitious

Facebook’s first real ad network has a surprisingly narrow scope. App developers will probably take to it, but other advertisers should stick with Google for now and wait for future Facebook mobile innovation.No doubt Facebook has lofty ambitions for its ad network, but its current focus is extremely limited. The company unveiled its initial plans for the Facebook Audience Network – note naming, no mention of mobile, or of apps – at its first developers’ conference in years. While it addresses some app developer needs, in its current incarnation FAN won’t re-invent mobile or social advertising, and it’s no threat to Google.
What it meansYou’d think that when Facebook finally announced an ad network, it would be a big deal. While the company is sensibly cautious about pushing ads too aggressively, this is a rare example of too much humility. And, perhaps, too much “mobile-first.” FAN is almost totally focused on app downloads, advertising for which has already propelled Facebook to the number two spot in mobile ad spending (and is a big part of its web ad business, too). But wouldn’t a cross-platform ad network, powered by Facebook’s ubiquitous log-in and Like services and targeting capabilities, better suit the company’s ambitions?
Fair enough – FAN debuted at a developers’ conference, not AdTech. And there’s plenty of hubris in Facebook’s middleware strategy to end-run mobile operating systems. Presumably, FAN is not dragging along too much leftover legacy technology from Facebook’s Atlas purchase. Still, while I’m tempted to say “Audience Network” may be a hint of bigger things to come, I’ve got to point out that its nearly 2-year-old, web-focused FBX “exchange” is not a true exchange yet. At least not one where advertisers can buy across a network of networks (see report).There’s a real need for what Facebook is doing. When Gigaom Research surveyed European developers as part of our EC-sponsored project to better understand the EU app economy (see report), they told us that business issues were far more challenging than technology, talent, or EU market conditions. I expect US developers would say the same. Only 16 percent of EU developers said they were “very satisfied” at achieving their business objectives. Nearly half (44 percent) were trying to make money charging for the apps themselves or in-app charges (30 percent), while less than a third (31 percent) sold ads. App discovery and promotion frustrates them, or costs too much.

Apps developers should appreciate FAN for the reasons above, although Facebook isn’t telling how it will share ad revenue, and it will take some time to see how ad pricing will shake out.

Google has little to worry about, at least not from Facebook. It’s far and away the leader in mobile advertising, though that’s primarily based on mobile search spending. But Google has a much broader collection of mobile ad offerings: budding location targeting, click-to-call, a mobile network suitable for both brand advertising and direct marketing, and YouTube mobile video. Big advertisers can run campaigns across mobile and web, and tie in display and search. Google’s problem is one of internal comparisons: mobile search clicks are less valuable than web-based ones. That’s the opposite of Facebook, whose increasing prices for mobile are more a reflection of how low its web CPMs are.Apple has never shown itself to be serious about selling advertising, and FAN could emerge as a viable alternative in app discovery and distribution. I’ve always been baffled why a developer can’t buy promotion in the App Store. It’s not payola, it’s paid search. Apple must respond.Other mobile app ad networks should be relieved that Facebook is focusing on app downloads and dabbling in other interactivity options. Geo-targeting, search integration, click-to-call, offers and referrals, video – there’s lots of open mobile turf.Brands and other advertisers should observe how FAN works for app developers, and see if Facebook learns anything about other interactions. But FAN doesn’t offer them much right now if they don’t have apps.

Facebook plans to share Nearby Friends location data with advertisers

Facebook has confirmed the data mined through the new Nearby Friends feature may one day be used for advertising and marketing purporses
The new tool, which is rolling out to iOS and Android apps in the coming weeks, allows users to share their location with select friends enabling pals to detect when they're in the locale and arrange meet ups offline.
At the time of the announcement on Thursday, Facebook made no mention of sharing the data with advertisers, which would have no doubt coloured the reaction to the feature.
Belatedly, a Facebook spokesperson has confirmed toTechCrunch: "At this time it's not being used for advertising or marketing, but in the future it will be."
Facebook is pitching the tool as a valuable new feature for users. It sends occasional notifications informing them how often friends, who've also agreed to be seen, are in the locale.
It will also follow users on their travels, allowing friends to pitch in with suggestions or recommendations wherever they roam around the world.
Knowing the end goal may be (or always was?) geared towards targeted advertisements may see some users change their views on the feature.

With Galaxy S5, Samsung Proves Less Can Be More

Samsung Electronics Co. has produced the most formidable rival yet to the iPhone 5s: the Galaxy S5. The device [is] the fifth edition of the company's successful line of Galaxy S smartphones. Its predecessor, the Galaxy S4, sold more than 10 million units worldwide just one month after being launched last year.

The GS5 may be more of an incremental step forward from its predecessor and will face more competition from capable, lower-cost devices. But the new Galaxy is expected to be one of the highest-selling phones in the U.S. this year.
"At the end of the day, it's the Galaxy brand, and with the push it will have in marketing, I'm sure the phone will sell well," said Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at consumer research firm Kantar World Panel. "Is it going to do more than the S4? I think the market is tougher this time around."
With the Galaxy S5, Samsung is showing that less can be more.
A year ago, Samsung tried to blow away consumers -- as well as its chief rival, Apple Inc.'s iPhone -- by packing seemingly every feature known to man into one device. The Galaxy S4 was a success, but consumers struggled to grasp the full capabilities of the device.
To improve user experience, Samsung has gone the opposite way with the GS5.
It consolidated many features into more understandable groups and eliminated other features altogether. The deleted features are still available to users through downloads so that customers can add features one by one, introducing themselves to each element over time.
This makes the GS5 a smartphone that is a lot easier to get to know than its predecessor.
Rather than trying to explain hundreds of features, Samsung instead focused on a few that make this device stand out from its peers. The phone has a top-notch screen, great durability, an improved camera, a long-lasting battery and useful health tracking capabilities.
With the GS5's 5.1-inch 1080p HD screen, Samsung knocks it out of the park in screen quality, delivering a display with sharp colors that are perfect for viewing videos and photographs.
The GS5's screen is slightly larger than the GS4's 5-inch screen, so the phone is a little longer. But it's easier to hold thanks to a grippable back cover with faux leather.
But when it comes to design, Samsung is still outflanked by Apple and HTC, which just released the highly stylish One (M8). If looks are important, buy an attractive case or pick another smartphone.

What the GS5 lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in durability.The phone is now rated for Ingress Protection 67, which means it is dust and water resistant. Samsung says the phone can be kept under as much as 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. In practical terms, IP 67 ensures that the phone won't be damaged by rain or an accidental drop in a toilet.I tested the feature by rinsing it under a faucet and dipping it in a glass of water. It kept working just fine.Samsung also improved the phone's camera, upping the rear lens to 16 megapixels from 13. The device takes some of the best photos of any camera phone, delivering images with vibrant colors.Its Phase Detection Autofocus software enables the camera to focus three times faster than other smartphones, according to Samsung. I'm not sure whether it lives up to those stats, but the GS5 did focus pretty quickly.The phone also can shoot photos in burst mode using high-dynamic range, or HDR, imaging, which combines multiple images into one with high-quality lighting throughout. Previously, users could shoot photos in HDR mode, but not in rapid sequence.The camera also includes a new Shot & More mode, which lets customers use one of five nifty effects. On the GS4, one effect had to be picked before taking a photo. The process is now reversed so customers can shoot first and pick the effect later.The battery on the GS5 lasts longer than its predecessor. And a new Ultra Power Saving Mode helps extend each charge by shutting off nearly everything on the phone except messages, calls and the ability to surf the Web.The new power-saving feature also conserves energy with a black-and-white mode that uses only some pixels on the screen. That provides about 24 hours of battery life even after the phone has fallen to the last 10% of its charge.Samsung has given the GS5 a healthy dose of fitness help. Like the GS4, the phone includes a pedometer and the S Health fitness app, which enables users to input what they eat. The GS5 also includes a heart-rate monitor so users can check their heart rate by launching the app and placing their index finger on the monitor.The new smartphone also has caught up with the iPhone 5s by adding fingerprint technology that lets users unlock their phones by scanning a finger over the home button.The nation's four major cellphone carriers are offering the GS5 for $200 to $250 with two-year contracts or up to $660 to buy the phone without a contract.

Apple and Samsung to renew patent battle in US court

Apple and Samsung will return to federal court in the heart

 of Silicon Valley tomorrow for a new round in their

 seemingly perpetual patent war.

The case concerns smartphone and tablet patents and is just

 the latest in a long-running feud between the two tech

 giants, who are battling for supremacy in a multi-billion-

dollar market.

“The parties tried hard to accuse each other’s latest and

 greatest products, but US patent litigation is slow, which is

 why this 2014 trial will be about 2012 and pre-2012

 products,” intellectual property analyst Florian Mueller said

 in a post at website fosspatents.com.

The rivals will face off once again before District Court Judge

 Lucy Koh in the California city of San Jose.

Koh presided over a trial last year that ended with a jury

 declaring Samsung owed Apple more that a billion dollars in

 damages for infringing patents with some older model

 Android-powered devices.

The damages award was later trimmed to $929 million and

 is being appealed.

If this new trial goes in Apple’s favor, it could result in an

 even bigger award since it involves better-selling Samsung

 devices built with Google-backed Android software.

This time California-based Apple is taking aim at Samsung’s

 flagship Galaxy line crafted to challenge the iPhone in the

 high-performance end of the market.

“Both in the United States and globally, Apple and Samsung

 have established themselves as fierce competitors in the

 smartphone market and fierce adversaries in the

 courtroom,” Koh said during rulings on injunctions,

 testimony and other matters ahead of trial.

Under pressure from Koh, the chiefs of Apple and Samsung

 engaged in mediation to see if the dispute could be settled 

out of court, but the talks failed.

However, the companies expressed willingness to keep

 talking, raising the slim possibility trial could be avoided.

Jury selection is to commence tomorrow. Koh is allowing

 each side 25 hours to present evidence to make its case to

 jurors.

Apple had filed the suit against the South Korean consumer

 electronics behemoth in February 2012 as “one action in a

 worldwide constellation of litigation between the two

 companies,” the judge said in a ruling.

Patents at issue in the case involve unlocking touch-screens

 with gestures; automatically correcting words being typed;

 retrieving data sought by users, and performing actions on

 found data such as making a call after coming up with a 

phone number.

LifePrint debuts on Kickstarter to bring smartphone picture printing home

Everyone is so obviously nostalgic for actual, physical, printed photographs these days. Within the past few months, new Kickstarter campaigns and officially launched apps, offering to print out your smartphone photos have popped up like daisies. Well, here's another one: LifePrint.

LifePrint is a small, iPad Mini-sized wireless printer that allows you to print your smartphone photos at home with no wires attached. The LifePrint wireless printer measures 6.5 x 4.5 x 1.5-inches and weighs just 1.5 pounds, so it is quite portable and easy to store when you're done using it. The printer's design is very simple. It looks like a small box with rounded edges and comes in three color options: all black, black with grey edging or white. The only marking on the printer, is LifePrint's pretty, loopy logo, which resembles a Polaroid candid.

Once the printer is connected to Wi-Fi, you can print your photos from anywhere using the LifePrint app. You can print your photos while you're sitting next the printer at home or you can do it remotely when you're on vacation or at work. For example, you can be in Stockholm taking pictures of your relatives and then, you can send those pictures over the Internet to your printer back in New York via the LifePrint app and come home to see them already printed and sitting on your desk.

The app also lets you choose filters, make adjustments, add text, frames and other cool effects before you hit print. You can also share your newly altered photos digitally on Facebook, Twitter, etc. if you so choose.

The only problem with LifePrint is that it's expensive. The printer itself may only cost $200, which is decent for a photo printer, but printing 30 photos will cost you about $20 and that's expensive. If you use Printicular - another new app that lets you print smartphone pictures at Walgreens and get them delivered - 30 4x6 photos will cost you less than $9. Another, called Flag, will give you 20 free prints each month (all the photos have an ad on the back). It's the cost of ink and photo-quality printer paper that drives up the cost of printing at home. Essentially, Walgreens is cheap and ink is expensive.

Still, it's a cool idea and nice if you don't want to deal with Walgreens. So far, LifePrint has gained more than $24,900 towards its $200,000 goal on Kickstarter. If all goes well and the project gets funded, LifePrint thinks it will be able to ship the printers in December and the iPhone app will arrive in January.

Apple Upgrades $399 iPad, Sells Cheaper iPhone 5C Overseas

Apple Inc. AAPL +0.88% tweaked its entry-level iPad and iPhone lineup, as rival offerings that run Google Inc. GOOG +1.62% 's Android operating system gain momentum among the most price-sensitive consumers.
The company refreshed its least expensive 9.7-inch tablet, swapping out the 2011 iPad 2 model for the fourth-generation version with a more powerful processor, faster wireless connectivity and a sharper display. Apple kept the price unchanged at $399 for the Wi-Fi version and at $529 for the Wi-Fi and cellular model.
The consumer-electronics giant also introduced a less expensive version of its iPhone 5C, the low-end version of its smartphone, with 8 gigabytes of memory—half the amount of its previous cheapest model. The new phone was launched Tuesday in the U.K., France, Germany, Australia and China. It won't be introduced in the U.S.
In China, the new iPhone 5C will sell for 4,088 yuan ($660) without a contract, versus 4,488 yuan for the 16-gigabyte model. In the U.K., the cheapest model will sell for £429 ($711), versus £469 for the 16-gigabyte iPhone 5C, without a contract.
The new products are hitting the market as competitors chip away at Apple's market share from the low-end, especially in smartphones. For example, a large percentage of China's smartphones sell for less than $200—making even the entry-level 5C more expensive than most phones on the market.
Android's market share for smartphones reached 79% in 2013, up from 69% a year earlier, according to market-research firm International Data Corp. By comparison, Apple's share of the market fell to 15.2% in 2013 from 18.7%.
Apple hopes to breathe new life into the 5C, which marks a change in its iPhone strategy. In the past, Apple targeted more price-sensitive consumers by offering its previous generation iPhone at a $100 discount. This time, it is offering the 5C, ostensibly a new model but essentially the same hardware as the previous-generation iPhone 5, with a plastic case that comes in five different colors.
While Apple doesn't break out sales for its various models, analysts cited the 5C as the reason iPhone sales came up short of expectations in the quarter ended December. According to analytics firm Mixpanel, the high-end iPhone 5S accounts for three times as much traffic on iPhone apps as the 5C. That doesn't necessarily mean that the 5S has outsold the 5C by 3 to 1, but it does suggest that there are significantly more 5S models in the market.
Apple also is updating the iPad as growth in tablet sales is expected to slow. IDC earlier this month cut its 2014 forecast for global tablet shipments. It now expects growth of 19% this year to 260.9 million units world-wide, down from 52% in 2013. Consumer purchases are expected to slow, IDC said, as fewer users feel compelled to upgrade the same way they did in the past.
Apple's iOS operating system dominated the tablet market for years, but it was overtaken in 2013 by Android. Apple's iOS made up 36% of world-wide tablet sales last year, according to market researcher Gartner Inc., compared with a 62% market share held by Android.
In January, Apple said it sold 26 million iPads in its latest quarter, its most ever, compared with 22.9 million in the year-earlier period.

واشنطن: قدمت مجموعة من خبراء الانترنت الأميركيين سبع نصائح لحماية مستخدمي المواقع الاجتماعية على الانترنت من القراصنة والمتطفلين الذين يسرقون بيانات المستخدمين ويستخدمونها لأغراض غير مشروعة.

وذكر تقرير متلفز أن أولى هذه النصائح هي جعل كلمة السر عصية على الحل من خلال الدمج بين الحروف والأرقام وتجنب استخدام تواريخ المناسبات الشخصية.

أما النصيحة الثانية فهي إخفاء تاريخ الميلاد فمن الأخطاء الشائعة التي يقع في شركها كثيرون ترك تاريخ الميلاد كاملا على الموقع الالكتروني غافلين عن أن هذا التاريخ يكفي للحصول على الكثير من المعلومات والبيانات الشخصية بما فيها الحساب المصرفي.

كما ينصح الخبراء بتقييد الدخول إلى الملف الشخصي الذي يضم بيانات خاصة وصور أسرة المستخدم ويجب الابتعاد عن العبارات التي تشير إلى عدم تواجد المستخدم مثل "أنا منطلق في إجازتي السنوية ولن أكون في المنزل خلال الشهر المقبل" لأن هذه العبارات بمثابة كارثة قد تشرع أبواب المنزل ونوافذه للصوص.

كما أنه من الأفضل عدم السماح للغرباء بالوصول إلى صفحة الدردشة الخاصة بالمستخدم حيث يمكن الذهاب إلى قسم ضوابط الخصوصية وإلغاء تفعيل خيار العام والاكتفاء بتحديد خيار السماح للأصدقاء فقط.

Twitter to be available on mobile phones without Internet

(Reuters) - Twitter Inc is tying up with a Singapore-based startup to make its 140-character messaging service available to users in emerging markets who have entry-level mobile phones which cannot access the Internet.U2opia Mobile, which has a similar tie-up with Facebook Inc, will launch its Twitter service in the first quarter of next year, Chief Executive and Co-founder Sumesh Menon told Reuters.Users will need to dial a simple code to get a feed of the popular trending topics on Twitter, he said.More than 11 million people use U2opia's Fonetwish service, which helps access Facebook and Google Talk on mobile without a data connection.Twitter, which boasts of about 230 million users, held a successful initial public offering last month that valued the company at around $25 billion.

U2opia uses a telecom protocol named USSD, or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, which does not allow viewing of pictures, videos or other graphics."USSD as a vehicle for Twitter is almost hand in glove because Twitter has by design a character limit, it's a very text-driven social network," Menon said.Eight out of 10 people in emerging markets are still not accessing data on their phone, he said.U2opia, which is present in 30 countries in seven international languages, will localize the Twitter feed according to the location of the user."So somebody in Paraguay would definitely get content that would be very very localized to that market vis a vis somebody sitting in Mumbai or Bangalore," he said.The company, whose biggest markets are Africa and South America, partners with telecom carriers such as Telenor, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel Ltd. U2opia usually gets 30 to 40 percent of what users pay its telecom partners to access Fonetwish."For a lot of end users in the emerging markets, it's going to be their first Twitter experience," Menon said.

MICROSOFT WILL SELL THE DELL VENUE 8 PRO FOR $99 ON MONDAY

Kicking off another 12 Days of Deals promotion this year, the Microsoft Store will be aggressively slashing the price of the Dell Venue 8 Pro on Monday from $299 to just $99. Likely attempting to extend the Black Friday and Cyber Monday holidays further into December, all 77 Microsoft Storesaround the country will offer the promotional price to the first twenty people in line for the Dell Venue 8 Pro tablets at 10 a.m. After the initial stock sells out, the tablet price will increase to $199 for the rest of the day while supplies last. The online version of the Microsoft Store will also offer the $99 deal to the first 100 people that start shopping at 10 a.m. ET on the site. Similar to the in-store promotion, the price will rise to $199 after the initial allotment of 100 tablets is sold. It’s possible that customers could have more luck obtaining the tablet at the brick and mortar locations as Microsoft relies on email advertising heavily over traditional fliers. 

The Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet comes with an 8-inch touchscreen (1,280-by-800 resolution), 32GB of storage on a SSD drive, the Intel Atom Z3740D quad-core processor (1.8GHz), 2GB of RAM and the full Windows 8.1 operating system. It also comes with card-reader support for MicroSD, SDHC and SDXC to expand the on-board storage space and a pre-loaded version of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. However, it does not come with a keyboard dock, something that’s included on a similar Windows 8.1 tablet around the same price point, the ASUS T100. Regarding the remainder of the 12 Days of Deals sale, Microsoft didn’t indicate if other sales would be as aggressive as the discount on the Dell Venue 8 Pro. However, Microsoft did mention other product categories offered in the promotions will include computers and smartphones as well as accessories related to fitness, music, Windows and Xbox. Fixing the Nexus 5: with a new version of Android, Google tackles the camera

Only a few years ago, Dave Burke remembers, cellphone users were just happy to have a camera at all. But expectations have changed. "If you have a smartphone, people want it to take pictures like a DSLR. Even in one year the quality bar and expectation bar has gone up higher and higher. Internally, ours have too. I think we can do better, and we are."
As he says this, Burke, Google's Director of Engineering for Android, is walking through all the changes Google has made to the Nexus 5's camera in the five weeks since the phone hit the market. The fruits of the Android team's efforts is Android 4.4.1, the update rolling out over the next few days that is designed to fix the buggy, inconsistent camera on what is otherwise one of the best Android phones on the market.
The changes break down in five categories, Burke says, autofocus first among them. Mixing speed and image quality requires a fragile balance, particularly in low light, and Android 4.4 skewed too far toward image quality. "There’s a tendency to say, 'oh, we have this cool thing that stabilizes, so lets make the shutter time longer, reduce the gain even longer, and get better shots.'" But while the Nexus 5's optical image stabilization allowed it to get better-than-average shots in low light, in good lighting it just made for frustratingly slow shooting speeds. By speeding up the framerate and increasing how quickly the camera can read its surroundings and fire a picture, Burke and his team improved the autofocus, the exposure, and the white balance. "You fix the motion blur," he says, "and make everything faster."
Speed is a theme for the update, and the Nexus 5's camera really does feel faster across the board. The app launches a full second quicker than it did before the update, meaning you'll miss many fewer shots than before. There's also a new progress indicator in HDR+ mode, which makes the process, longer by necessity, feel a lot more straightforward. It's the first of what Burke says will be a series of interface changes, as Google tries to make Android cameras a little more controllable and obvious. Right now, nearly every setting is buried under layers of menus, and Burke says Google is working on undoing that.IN ONLY FIVE WEEKS, GOOGLE MASSIVELY UPGRADED THE NEXUS 5'S CAMERABut even now, after just five weeks of work, the Nexus 5's camera has been massively improved. We've only had a day with the software, but the changes are clear. Before, there were shots you simply couldn't get — I learned to not even try with fast-moving subjects, especially in low light, but now a picture of the New York City skyline out the window of a taxi is crisp and in focus, even if it's not quite as sharp as on an iPhone 5S. The Nexus 5 just inspires confidence in a way it never did before. It doesn't take six tries to get a picture in focus, because the camera doesn't re-focus again as soon as you hit the shutter. It just fires, and far more often than not gets a crisp, clear photo.
Photos are a little more contrasted, too, with slightly more vibrant colors. Burke says this was an intentional change, that "we just wanted to make photos pop a little more." The effect occasionally goes too far, with reds and oranges exploding off the screen, but for the most pictures look lively and accurate.
There's still plenty of work to be done, of course. The camera app desperately needs a one-touch way to focus and capture an image, for one thing: moving your hand from focusing to firing doesn't cause blur the way it used to, but it still means you'll miss quick-moving subjects. Photos can still come out looking over-processed, and focusing in low light still takes a while. Burke says his team is working on "tuning the edge cases," too, making sure the camera can function properly in strangely lit situations.
With Android 4.4.1 on board, however, the Nexus 5's camera stops being a dealbreaker — it's not the best smartphone camera, but it's a camera you can use confidently and expectantly knowing that it will almost always deliver. It may not take the perfect shot yet, but rarely offers anything but a completely usable one. Burke says it's only going to get better, though he admits there's a lot to do. "Cameras can be pretty complicated," he says.
