Architectural Research Institute

The Architectural Research Institute is designed as a decentralized organization which should exist within every kingdom of Angelica (NA-W). Its purpose is the research of architectural technologies & techniques and disseminating those technologies & techniques to its members.

What is an Institute?

An institute is an organisational body created for a certain purpose. Often they are research organisations (research institutions) created to do research on specific topics. An institute can also be a professional body, or one involved in adult education.

Why join an Institute?

If you're wondering why you should join an Institute rather than just researching stuff yourself, in Chronicles of Elyria the speed of research is based on the number of people researching that technology. So by researching in a group the speed of the research will be many orders of magnitude faster. It will also be based on how long it takes the developers to implement those technologies. For technologies nobody in the world would know how to make or technology that the developers don't want to add to the game, generally the research will fail but you'll still discover some kind of useful breakthrough along the way so it's still worth your time.

The general concept is that an Institute vs an Individual, the Institute will always research faster. But that individual may have an idea the Institute never thought of. So while the individual may research much more slowly, they may end up being the one person in the world with that technology. But of course if the Institute had that idea as well then they would achieve it much more quickly than the individual.

At the end of the day, Chronicles of Elyria is starting at around the Elyrian equivalent of the middle dark bronze ages. There will be a lot of research that needs to be done for architecture and we should all work together.

What would we even research?

That's really up to the members of the Institute to decide but here are some examples:

  • Steel reinforced concrete. Why: It's anti-tornado/hurricane, and anti-fire. Concrete is fireproof. It also significantly helps against earthquakes. Explanation: It's not as far fetched as you might think for medieval times. Romans had concrete they called opus caementicium long before the medieval age. Opus caementicium uses volcanic ash as a component, is resistant to cracks, and can set under water. It's also ~60% cheaper to make than modern concrete and it has survived the test of time even in earthquake prone areas - concrete that isn't even steel reinforced.
  • Structural base isolation "stilts, " diaphragms, trusses, cross-bracing, and moment-resisting frames. Why: For earthquake/tsunami proofing. Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do. And repair costs after an earthquake can be catastrophic. Better to do it right the first time and not have to rebuild. There's a good chance we will see natural disasters, so better to prepare for worst case scenarios than be proper fucked when they occur.
