Alfie closes the ring

Alfie Montgomery, the man who famously traced the owner of a wedding ring he found at the site of an American aircrash in World War II has been speaking about his experiences.

Alfie had the monthly Fortwilliam Townswomen Guild meeting enthralled as he recounted how the plane crashed on June 1, 1944 with 10 USA airmen killed.

He recalled years later finding the ring with the inscription To Ruth from Larry 1939 inside and the difficulties he encountered finding the rightful owner.

After many searches and enquiries to the USA Military, Louisville, Kentucky was pinpointed as Larry's hometown. Insertions in the Louisville Daily followed which prompted Ruth to get in touch with the Editor, who in turn reached Alfie with the good news.

Meeting Ruth and returning the ring was a special moment, although Ruth had remarried after the war.

Close up photos of the ring were displayed and also relics belonging to the plane which Alfie had found over the years since. His talk ended with questions and answers.
