Demag a German heavyweight

Had some requests from a couple of readers for some material on the Demag H185S, so I’m happy to oblige with a post on this German built classic.

Demag a German heavyweight
I recall growing up as a kid in the 70’s and seeing and collecting posters of some of Demag’s earlier heavyweight machines like the H101 and H111 which seemed like massive machines back in the day. The H101 weighed in the region of 80 tonnes, but there were much larger machines to come from Demag before they were eventually gobbled up by Komatsu Mining in the mid 1990’s. At the Bauma Trade Fair in Munich in 1995 the company displayed the new H185S, a 216 tonne mid-range machine which would carry a 14-cubic metre face shovel bucket. The example on display was in backhoe configuration as seen here in this photo courtesy of German website www.lkw-stefan.de   There are dwindling numbers of these machines at work in the UK, but the example seen in the video below from PA Mining is at work in America.
