1. Golden Globe Awards

The Revenant bags three awards-best drama film, best actor in a drama for Leonardo Dicaprio and best director for Alejandro G. Innarritu - at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards in Los Angles.

2. DSC Prize for South Asian Literature

India’s Anuradha Roy has won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2016 for her novel, Sleeping on Jupiter, which deals with the subject of violence against women.

3. BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards)

Indo-British film-maker Asif Kapadia wins BAFTA for his poignant documentary Amy on late British singer Amy Winehouse.

4. 58th annual Grammy Awards

Taylor Swift wins album of the year for 1989 at the 58th annual Grammy Awards.

5. 66th Annual Berlin International Film Festival

The Golden Bear is awarded to Italian documentary Fire at Sea by Gianfranco Rosi. 

6. 88th Academy Awards (Oscar Award)

Newspaper drama Spotlight bags the best picture award. Leonardo Dicaprio wins his first Oscar, for a best actor in the The Revenant. George Miller’s post-apocalyptic chase film, Mad Max: Fury Road bags six awards. Best actress award is won by Brie Larson (Room).

7. Abel Prize

Sir Arthur Wiles, an Oxford University professor is awarded the Abel Prize, “for his stunning proof of Fermat last theorem”, a 300-year-old mystery.

8. First Civilian President of Myanmar

Htin Kyaw, a close aide of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi is elected as the first Civilian President of Myanmar. 

9. Spaceflight first, Space X Falcon 9

In spaceflight first, Space X Falcon 9 rocket blasts off from Florida on a NASA Cargo run to the ISS and its reusable main stage booster lands on an Ocean platform.

10. Pulitzer Prize

The Associated Press wins the Pulitzer for Public Services. Alisa J. Rubin of The New York Times wins the prize for international reporting. The New Yorker bags two prizes, a year after magazines qualified for the award.

11. Paris Climate Agreement

A total of 175 nations, including India signed the Paris climate agreement at United Nation.

12. Man Booker International Prize

South Korean author Han Kang wins the Man Booker International Prize for her book The Vegetarian and shares it with her translator Deborah Smith.

13. 69th Cannes Film Festival

I, Daniel Blake by British director Ken Loach wins the Palme dÓr for Best Picture at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.

14. Agreement between India and Iran

India and Iran signed a series of agreements that will allow New Delhi to use the port of Chahbahar to access Central Asia and Afghanistan.

15. 28th Annual National Geographic Bee

Rishi Nair, an Indian American sixth grader from Florida takes top honours at the 28th Annual National Geographic Bee.

16. World’s longest rail Tunnel      

The World’s longest rail Tunnel, 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel providing a rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern parts of Europe.

17. Global Leadership Award

Amazon Inc. CEO Jeff Bezos awarded the Global Leadership Award.

18. Solar Impulse 2     

The Solar Impulse 2, the solar-powered airplane on a globe circling voyage that began in March 2015 from Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital complete a trip across the USA. It was piloted by Swiss pioneer Bertrand Piccard.

19. Tony Awards

Liun-Manuel Miranda’s musical biography Hamilton on the first US Treasury Secretary wins 11 Tony at Tony Award.

20. Juno Spacecraft    

NASA’s solar-powered $ 1.1 billion Juno spacecraft successfully enters Jupiter’s orbit after a five-year journey from Earth.

21. Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival      

Hungarian film ‘It’s Not The Time of My Life’ wins the top prize at Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival

22. Skydiver creates history

Luke Aitkins, a skydiver with more than 18,0000 jumps creates history by jumping without parachute and lands in net at the  Big Sky movie ranch on the outskirts of Simi Valley in California, USA.

23. Sarajevo Film Festival’s lifetime achievement award   

Actor Robert De Niro is awarded with ‘Heart Saranjevo’ the Sarajevo Film Festival’s lifetime achievement award.

24. Mother Teresa’s sainthood       

Pope Francis proclaims Mother Teresa of Kolkata a saint at a canonisation mass attended by 100,000 pilgrims at the Vatican, Rome.

25. 68th Emmys Award        

Fantasy epic ‘Game of Thrones’ makes television history by bagging 12 Emmy at the 68th Emmys.

26. Nobel Prize 2016

Nobel Medicine Prize: Yoshinori Ohsumi for pioneering work on autophagy.

Nobel Prize in Physics: David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz for revealing unusual states of matter potentially helping work on future quantum computers.

Nobel Prize for Chemistry: Jean-Pierre Sauvage of France,  J. Fraser Stoddart of Britain and Bernard Feringa of the Neatherland

India signs a historic civilian nuclear deal with Japan during the annual bilateral summit in Tokyo and becomes the first non-NPT nation to ink.

30. New King of Thailand

 Crown Prince Maha Vajiralonkorn becomes the new King of Thailand.

31. Miss World 2016

Puerto Rico’s Stephanie del Valle crowned as Miss World 2016 at a pagneat in Oxen Hill, Maryland, the USA.
