Freshman Emma Shinsky accounts for the Rams’ lone goal on the first of her collegiate career in the 63rd minute

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Colorado State freshman forward Emma Shinsky netted her first collegiate goal as the Rams battled the Air Force Falcons to a 1-1 draw on Friday night from Cadet Soccer Stadium.

Shinsky is the fifth freshman from Colorado State (2-4-3, 0-0-1 MW) to score a goal this season. The Rams' eight goals from freshmen this season continues to be the most of any freshman class in the Mountain West. Her goal came in the 63rd minute, while Air Force's (3-4-1, 0-0-1 MW) tally came from Angela Karamanos in the 71st minute.

Shinsky's goal in the 63rd minute of play was set up by Alex Lanning, who played a chip to the freshman in the 18-yard box. Shinsky was able to slide and get her foot on the 50/50 ball to tap it past Falcon goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink, who came out of the goal area to attempt to play the ball. It trickled past Hiddink and into the net, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Air Force responded with the game-tying tally eight minutes later on a corner kick set piece. The Falcons' Kaylee Shalango sent the ball across the mouth of the goal, where Karamanos was able to head it to the top of the net and just out of the reach of CSU keeper Hunter Peifer.

Neither team was able to break the scoreless tie through the remainder of regulation and either period of extra time. The Rams' top chance after the goals came in the 85th minute, when a cross into the box found the head of CSU's Lexi Swenson. The junior's header was on net, but Hiddink was in position to make the stop.

Peifer (2-3-3) made four saves over the full 110 minutes of action. Halley Havlicek and Beth Plentl each also played the full 110 minutes, while Janelle Stone was on the pitch for 102. Hannah Gerdin recorded a team-high five shots with two on goal. Caeley Lordemann also finished with a pair of shots on goal.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the result:
"We battled tonight because we are competitors, and for an away first game, we got a point. Our opponent hadn't played in almost two weeks and were excited to play, so for an away first game we'll take the one point for sure."

On Emma Shinsky's goal in the 63rd minute:
"Emma's goal was an effort goal - not a ton of 'pretty' - but they all count. It was a result of her desire to score more than the defender wanted to stop her. From my point of view, it didn't look promising, but Emma didn't give up on it. We need more of those types of goals. It can be a struggle to score, and if we get five or six of those, then we'll surely take them."

On Beth Plentl and Halley Havlicek playing the entire contest
"I bet if you asked Beth, she'd say she has the ability to play another half-hour. The overall physically of the college game really hit Halley last season, and in my mind, her jump from freshman to sophomore year is exactly what you hope players do."
