BANGOR, Maine — Pedestrians have been asked to stay away from the waterfront walkway until city crews can address a sinkhole that has developed, according to Public Works Director Dana Wardwell.

The sinkhole, located about 200 feet south of the intersection of Railroad and Front streets, is believed to have been caused by the collapse of a storm water outfall line, Wardwell said in a press release issued around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He said the hole, which is about 8 feet deep and about 15 feet around, appears to be stable at this time, but as a precaution, the road and parking areas south of Railroad Street between the railroad tracks and Penobscot River have been closed until public works and sewer crews can address it.

Wardwell said crews must wait until low tide, at 5:30 p.m., to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole and begin the repairs.

Some streetlights may be out in the area as crews perform repairs, he said.
