Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) and Aalborg University (AAU) have secured EUR 20 million in funding for a research and development project which aims to reduce the cost of offshore wind.

The will test a complete installation of a future version of a full-scale Siemens Gamesa offshore turbine on a new 1000-ton bucket foundation. The foundation will feature a steel jacket, a concrete transition piece and a new cable connection.

"It is a fundamental task for us in Siemens Gamesa to help reduce the cost of offshore wind energy, and we are looking forward to providing UE funding for this work. Our constant focus on innovation - together with strong partners, customers and support as this project from the EU - enables us to push the industry forward, deliver a lower energy price and higher annual energy production. The work we must do during this project has clear goals to benefit our customers, taxpayers and society," says Jesper Møller, Senior Director of Offshore Technologies at SGRE's Offshore Business Unit.

In addition, the project will test installation solutions that are even more sustainable than those currently used and generate less noise.

"With the help of a suction cup foundation, we can protect whales and other underwater life by eliminating the sound waves that come when you hammer a foundation in the seabed. And once the wind turbine has to be taken down again, the suction cups, the jacket foundation and the crosspiece can also be removed and removed relatively easily. The materials, including steel, concrete and cables, can be recycled in a highly resource efficient manner. So there are many benefits also environmentally about the prospects of this project," says Møller.
