Dear andyBall,
Is there any way to unlock the safari homepage-setting?
My problem was that my homepage was "hijacked" (I guess) and was permanently changed to some unknown search-site. Then i used your code in Terminal and changes it back to Google. But I am wondering if there's any chance to unlock it?
I've attached a screenshot of the preferences on Safari on my Mac (It's in Danish by the way).
I hope you, or someone else, could be of any help.
Each User account has its own settings and other Users can't change things in your account (unless you let them use your account).
Set up a guest account (System preferences) and log out of yours when switching Users.
Thank you for your reply, but I maybe did not explain exactly what I need.
I have to setup a managed account, and I would prevent users from changing Safari's homepage and proxy settings.
While I could lock the proxy settings, I could not figure out how to lock this preference. I contacted Apple support, but they told me it is not a feature. I wonder if there's some third-party extension or plug in or anything else.
Thank you all
Get Workgroup Manager from Apple, the version appropriate for your OS. It allows forcing all kinds of preferences, including that, and proxy settings per-user, if required.
Thanks Andy.
When I start WM, it asks address, username and password. I believe it is part of OS X Server Tools. This is great for Mac Pro and Mac mini. I have additional Macbook pro laptops and they are personal but managed. They should log in with managed users in order to accomplish that, right?
Server is not required to use WGM.
Cancel the connect dialogue, press Command D (Server menu - View Directories), dismiss any warnings about local conifg not beiing visible... (you may get another later)
Click the padlock top right & authenticate as an admin; select a user from the left pane; click 'preferences' at the top of the WGM window.
If it's just the homepage, you may find it easier from Terminal, no need for WGM.
sudo dscl . mcxset /Users/USERNAME com.apple.Safari HomePage always -string "ADDRESS"
Change 'username' and 'address'... keep the quotes. That won't stop anyone altering 'Safari Opens with' or the other preferences.
Wow Andy... THIS IS GREAT! It is exactly what I needed.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome.
