Today is #AmericanRedCrossFoundersDay, the day we honor the anniversary of the American Red Cross. Clara Barton founded it in 1881, was the first president of the organization and led it for 23 years. This organization offers support for millions. I personally experienced these services: * Communication services and comfort for military members and their families * Educational programs on preparedness, health, and safety The American Red Cross coordinated my return home from Guam within 24 hours when my youngest son was critically ill. As a youth, I was an instructor in Water Safety, CPR, and Back Injury Prevention and was a certified babysitter. How has the American Red Cross impacted your life? Join the Veteran Champion Movement. Ever thought about hiring military spouses? Veterans and military spouses are being recruited in record numbers. Military spouses are an underrepresented talent pool, with unemployment hovering around 21%. In its 11th year of the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership, in 2023, 70 new employers were inducted to join the push to hire military spouses. Since its inception, more than 250,000 military spouses have been connected to employment opportunities across the nation. Employers who participate undergo a robust vetting process. Their commitment includes “recruiting, hiring, promoting and, most importantly, retaining military spouses,” said Patricia “Patty” Barron, deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy. #MilitaryAppreciationMonth is a month-long observance, dedicated to people who are currently serving in the United States military. There are many ways civilian Veteran Champions can offer support.
