Monday After School Clubs at Sidcup

If you haven't already done so, please can you ensure that you have made payment via ParentPay for your child(s) after school club being held at SCC by 8am on Monday 24 April.

From the Head…

Welcome back to school! I do hope that you all enjoyed a relaxing Easter holiday and were able to make the most of the fabulous weather we had.

The children have returned to school raring to learn and I have seen some wonderful examples of collaborative learning as I have walked around the classrooms.

In assembly on Wednesday, I showed the children a short video entitled ‘Soar’, demonstrating the value of perseverance. We learnt the mantra ‘try, try again’ and also learnt that it is ok to ask for help if you cannot do something. On Thursday, the children learnt about St George’s Day and how brave St George was when battling the dragon. The Upper School children also found out a little more about Shakespeare (whose birthday is thought to be on 23rd April) and I was very impressed with their knowledge of some of his less well known plays. Well done to all the children who went away and researched the word for one of Shakespeare’s famous solo speeches - lots of House Points have been awarded for correct answers!

Have a lovely weekend,

Kind regards

Miss Claire Holloway

Headteacher

Year 6

Year 6 have settled into the Summer Term with a renewed determination to enjoy and relish all of the opportunities and experiences ahead - especially starting to prepare for their Presentation Evening. In mathematics this week we have been continuing our algebraic learning and have progressed to ratios. In English we have started our new Power of Reading book, the children are excited to read more. In Science the children finished their unit on Electricity by making circuits and predicting the changes when more bulbs, or a motor was added to the circuit.

Year 5

It was wonderful to hear about the exciting holidays and day trips the children had over the Easter break. This week Year 5 wrote their own stories based on the title, ‘Lost’. The children thought carefully about their setting and wrote using vivid descriptions to engage the reader. In Science the children learnt about space time and how Newton and Einstein had two different opinions and theories about gravity.

Year 4

Now that the weather is warmer, we have started to read books in the story garden area. It is wonderful to see the wide array of titles which the children have chosen and how engrossed they are. Some children even read during playtime because they can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Thank you for continuing to make sure that your child reads for at least 20 minutes at home every day. This will be independent reading at this stage, although it can be helpful to discuss the book with your child from time to time.

We have been looking at idioms, such as, ‘It’s a piece of cake’, and what they mean. We have exchanged drawings of these with the school that we are twinned with in France, to compare them in different languages. It was interesting to see that we say that we are feeling ‘over the moon’, whereas in French it is, ‘Avoir la pêche’ (to have the peach).

This week 4T made a short clip of common English expressions to share with the children in France. Thank you Mrs Kiley for filming it on one of the school’s new iPads and to Felix Clissold for the wonderful editing. Later this half-term 4S will also be making one - judging by the confidence and creativity the children showed in their class assembly, it will be great!

Year 3

The children have very much enjoyed commencing their new topics for the Summer Term. We kicked off our Anglo-Saxon learning with a bang by looking at all of the marvellous Anglo-Saxon houses the children created over the Easter Holidays. The details added of animals, fences, fires and smoke are quite extraordinary; they are truly spectacular, so many thanks for your hard work in helping the children achieve these.

We also commenced our new Geography topic this term in which the children will be studying their local area of Greenwich.

Now we are in the Summer Term and the weather is milder, we hope to encourage the children to keep fit by running a daily mile when time allows. The children will be accompanied by staff and will run to the local park and back. The children are able to run in their school uniforms but it would be most useful if children could leave their trainers in a separate bag on their pegs for the duration of the week.

Year 2

The children have come back into school raring to get to grips with their new topics. They have been introduced to the rainforest and will research some more information this weekend for homework. They have chosen what clubs they will take part in, starting from next week. It was lovely to hear about their exciting holidays and what they had been up to. It is always lovely to see them so animated when they talk about these events. The children are very lucky.

Year 1

It was a delight to see so many smiling faces on Wednesday morning as the children arrived back at school ready to learn for their last term in Year 1. This week in our PSHEE lesson, both classes discussed what they thought they were good at and any positive qualities they possess. We also visited the library today. This gave an opportunity to mix the year group and we encouraged the children to spend time with different friends, sharing books and discussing their Easter news. It was lovely to see the children building new relationships. This term our focus will be on friendship and inclusion.

Reception

Reception have come back to school excited to see their friends and share the different things they got up to during the Easter holidays. This week the children have been introduced to our new topic all about space. In RSJ we have started looking at the planets and discovering interesting facts about them. We enjoyed discovering how craters were made on Mercury, having a go ourselves using ‘space flour’ and rockets. In RC the children have built their own rocket, to be used as part of their role play area, dressing up in astronaut costumes and going on journeys into space.

Nursery

The children in Nursery were all very excited to be back at school and to see their friends after the Easter break. To begin our new topic “Under the Sea” we read the book, “Commotion in the Ocean”. We started to find out about the many different, amazing creatures that live under the sea. The children talked about their favourite creatures from the book and made split pin moveable mobiles of them. We also created our very own ocean map for our sea creatures to play in!

We are all looking forward to reading the many different sea themed books that we will be sharing over the coming weeks.

Thank you very much for supporting Marie Curie last month. We raised £358.86 at the Easter Concert, and a further £85.92 from the sale of daffodils. This money is already being used to provide over 22 hours of hands on nursing care and emotional support for people living with a terminal illness. Mrs Farrell
