Miley Cyrus just experienced every girl's worst nightmare: she cut off a chunk of her eyelashes with an eyelash curler. (!!!) Yes, it can actually happen! Though eyelash curlers are mostly harmless tools, if you don't use them correctly, this horror can happen:

But don't toss your curler in the trash just yet. Used the right way, it can give you seriously epic lashes and really open up your eyes. So, how do you avoid Miley's disaster from happening to you?

"A huge, huge, HUGE, thing is to make sure you wipe excess mascara off the curler after each use," says celeb makeup artist Joseph Carrillo. "You can't let it get sticky and gunky." Basically, if you have leftover mascara on your curler, your lashes can stick to it, ripping them off when you use it. Eeeeeeek!

Joseph also advises replacing the cushion, the little soft squeezy thing that sits on the curling part of the tool, often. A pack only costs $1 to $3 at any beauty supply store. And really, any money is worth keeping your own lashes from being chopped off, right?! Be careful out there.
