Pit bull puppy saves family from fire, carries baby by diaper

A hero pit bull puppy saved a baby girl and her family from a nearby fire that spread to their home, according to the child’s mother.

Just before midnight on June 3, Sasha, an 8-month-old pit bull, alerted the sleeping family to danger by barking and banging on the door of their Stockton, California, rental, according to Fox 40.

Nana Chaichanhda opened the door to see why the dog was yelping and behaving strangely. Before she even realized her cousin’s building in her fourplex was on fire, Sasha barged through the door and ran into 7-month-old Masailah’s room.

“She had already had my baby by the diaper and was dragging her off the bed,” Chaichanhda said.

Chaichanhda said she isn’t surprised that Sasha rushed to her youngest daughter’s aid. The pair has a special bond and even bathe together, she told KCRA.

Chaichanhda’s cousin was not home at the time of the fire and — thanks to the dog’s heroism — no one was injured. Normally, Chaichanhda doesn’t keep the dog outside at night, but she’s happy that she did on this particular occasion.

“I owe her everything. If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn,” she told Fox 40.

The fire eventually spread to Chaichanhda’s unit and her home is currently unlivable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her sister Christine White.

Sasha is staying with another family member while Chaichanhda, who is staying with her aunt, looks for a new place to live with her three young children. according to the Sacramento Bee. Chaichanhda – a single mom – has a 9-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter in addition to her 7-month-old baby girl, White told The Post in an email.

“She misses the kids and sleeping in their beds. I take the kids over there so Sasha doesn’t cry all day,” Chaichanhda said.

“It’s hard to answer the questions, ‘Where are we going to live?’ and ‘Are we going to be homeless?’ when I’m trying to figure that out as well, so right now we’re leaning on each other.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
