Biologist would be 1st women to lead Maine wildlife agency

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Democratic Gov.-elect Janet Mills is nominating a longtime state wildlife director to lead the inland fisheries and wildlife agency.

Mills announced Wednesday that she wants 48-year-old Wildlife Division Director Judy Camuso to serve as the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s next commissioner.

Camuso, who’d be the first women to lead the agency, will face a committee hearing and a Senate confirmation vote.

Mills said Camuso has over 10 years of experience at the agency. Her current role leaves her responsible for a $12 million annual budget and a staff of 45.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is charged with protecting and managing fish, non-game wildlife and habitats, as well as restoration of endangered species.
