9Muses Art Center Featured on South Florida PBS ‘Your Story’

Mental health through fine arts, support groups and recovery workshops

She speaks candidly about her journey from isolation to recreation and support from fellow members of the center and discusses her increased self-esteem and acquired skills designed to maintain mental wellness. Your South Florida is a new genre of public affairs programming that allows the people of South Florida to better understand community issues that impact them. The show aired over the weekend of January 5, 2018 and has resulted in increased public interest in what 9Muses Art Center has to offer.

Pleased by public response to 9Muses Art Centers’ programs, Director of Adult Services Chris Yoculan stated, “Mental health is a goal for everyone and recovery should be free to anyone who wishes to engage in mental wellness activities in a safe environment without regard to stigma.”

The center offers a wide array of fine arts and performing arts. Classes are taught by trained professionals and are designed to include one on one instruction. Performing arts include voice, piano, guitar, and acting. Creative writing and poetry classes are also available as well as guided meditation and clay techniques. Evidence based practices are incorporated in the 9Muses program curriculum including, Peer Zone ​Developed by Mary O’Hagan with Sara McCook Weir, WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Planning) and WHAM (Wellness Health Action Management).

9Muses Art Center is a program of the Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida. It was established in 1997. Membership is free to anyone with a mental health diagnosis or behavioral health issue. Attendance at 9Muses is restricted to adults over age eighteen. Members are free to come and go as they wish.
