The average annual cost of a personal care home or assisted living in Pennsylvania is $41,400¹. While some older Pennsylvanians are fortunate enough to pay privately for these services, a much larger percentage simply cannot.

A care home is a communal setting where nursing, and or personal care, and accommodation are provided together. The accommodation is purpose built and residents have their own bedroom, usually with an en-suite bathroom. All meals and refreshments are provided, as are housekeeping services such as laundry and cleaning.

Specific Differences Assisted Living Residences are licensed under 55 PA. Code, Chapter 2800 by the Office of Long-Term Living. Though they do provide similar care to Personal Care Homes, they also have the capability to care for people who require heavier care for a longer period of time.

In addition to medical benefits (i.e., doctor's appointments, laboratory services, x-rays, hospitalization), dental, and behavioral health benefits, a variety of home and community based services are available via ALTCS. An individual care plan determines which services and supports a program participant receives.
