Violence against women is a global issue of pandemic proportions, which has an impact on all societies. This Handbook is designed to assist and guide police officers in the prevention of, and response to, violence against women.

This is an international, comparative survey which interviews random samples of women about their experiences with male violence. The authors form a management team for the International Violence Against Women Survey (IVAWS).

The scale of violence against women is therefore not reflected by official data. This FRA survey is the first of its kind on violence against women across the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU).
