You are welcome here. Jesus said, "Love God and love your neighbor as yourself." We, the congregation of Newberg First United Methodist Church, follow this commandment by welcoming all people of any race, ethnicity, identity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, economic status, religion, or life situation into the life and ministries of the church. With open minds we affirm that all people are created in the image of God and all are worthy of God's love and grace. We welcome you to join us in our faith journey toward greater love, understanding, and mutual respect. Come, grow in grace with us.
Coming Opportunity

Parent's Night Out
July 7

During the summer, we will celebrate the things that YOU do to share the love and grace of Jesus Christ! We will also update you on other church business so that we can begin to think of ways to be the best stewards of our resources. Please talk about these things during coffee hour or when you gather with your friends.

Here are some discussion items to get you started:
  • Did you know that Steve Freeman does all the mowing for the church?
  • Did you know that our Trustees will soon be replacing the front and basement entrance doors with Handicap Accessible doors? Cost: $25,000.
  • Did you know that we are giving our elderly folks from around the Assisted Living facilities a ride to church on Sundays? Thank Chris Lee for getting this re-started!
More info to come soon!

The purpose of the church is to help others grow in faith so that they too will choose to follow the Christ. One way that we do that here is through Sunday School.

Over the past few years, we have had a different teacher each Sunday in the classes for our children. This is not the best way to foster relationships between our adults and our children. And having a relationship across generations is so very important!

For the Fall, 2017, we’d like to see if we can find people who will teach for 2-4 Sunday’s in a row! The optimum would be to have the same teacher and a theme for a month at a time. This would allow the children to get to know a teacher better and have some continuity in the lessons.

As a Christ follower, it is up to YOU to help young Christ followers grow in faith! Even if you have never “taught” before, I know that our children would love to have you come and tell your story of faith, share a time when you knew God was with you, or help them learn a new song of faith!

Our Education chair, Kathleen Heimuller, and Meg Lewis-Price, our Family Ministry Director, will be working together to put together theme ideas and teachings. Of course you are welcomed to add your own ideas!

PLEASE be in prayer that those with gifts in teaching will step forward and help our young ones learn. It is our responsibility to tell the stories of Jesus!

COOKING WITH CATALYST

The partnership with Catalyst is growing!  In the fall, we’ll be working with a class called “Nutrition and Wellness.” Here is how it will work:
  • Monday’s from 10:30 until 11:30 approx. 8-10 students will come to NFUMC to apply what they are learning in the class.
  • A volunteer will help them cook something simple or learn a skill that will help them in preparation for cooking.
  • The teachers at the school will work with us by providing lesson plans so that we can plan accordingly. It would be fine to review things they have already learned or to practice things they need more time with.
  • The school received a $500 grant to help purchase Kitchen supplies to use. They will get us a list of needs, we will see what we can get donated (things in good condition), and then they will purchase the rest.
  • The first class would be Sept. 11, 2017.
  • There are funds available to cover any food that you purchase for the classes. Just turn in your receipts for a refund!
Because the 50 year old stoves and burners are not what most people cook on today, the Trustees are looking into replacing one of them. There has already been $1000 donated to this project, but the cost would be over $5000. So we will need to raise funds for this in order to get it done for maximum use in this partnership with our community.
What you can do!!
  • VOLUNTEER! So far we only have 3 volunteers. If we have 6, you’d only need to lead a class once every 6 weeks! If we have 12, once every 12 weeks! The more the better!
  • TELL YOUR FRIENDS THAT WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
  • Donate to the STOVE fund and/or the Cooking with Catalyst fund.
  • Contact Janelle Bolt, Lead Organizer, at the church, to get on the list of volunteers.
