GERAKAN vice-president Dominic Lau has announced that he is gunning for the party’s president post with the party’s Penang chairman Oh Tong Keong contesting the deputy president post as his running mate.

Lau also unveiled his three-pronged plan for the party’s future should he win the presidency; strengthening the party’s organisational structure, bringing the party closer to the people and performing check and balance on the government.

“I want to thank party elders and our grassroots members for supporting the announcement of my candidacy, of Oh as my running mate, and I would also like to announce the three directions that we will take the party in,” he told reporters in Gerakan’s headquarters today.

On strengthening the party, Lau said he wanted to encourage a sense of belonging and pride in members, and bring the party back to its roots and ideology started in 1969.

“Let party members return and work with the party’s roots, we will task Satu Academy with propagating our ideology to our party members.

“We will also organise ‘white coffee talks’ to espouse our ideology to the people, and improve members’ capabilities so political issues can be handled correctly,” he said.

Lau said the party can only make a difference at the next general election if it regains the people’s trust, and this needed to be done systematically.

On performing proper checks and balances against the government, he said Gerakan has already quit Barisan Nasional and is now an independent party.

He said the party is free to support any policy that benefits the people and reject policies that are detrimental to the people. – November 7, 2018.
