Spring Music Showcase
We were treated to another evening of musical excellence last Friday, where students of all ages showcased their talents by performing solos to an audience who were suitably impressed!  We have a large number of students who learn instruments or sing at Hayesfield and it is lovely to see the progress that they are making.  I know that practice makes perfect and the performers had obviously put in the hours to reach such a high standard. My thanks also go to Mr Page who accompanied some of the pieces on our very glossy piano. I left full of the joys of spring
News from Bath City Youth U14 Football Club
It’s lovely to receive news of our students’ successes in the sports and activities that they take part in within our local community. This week, the Manager of this U14 Football Club, Mr Niel Clampitt, shared with me the outcomes of the Wiltshire Girls’ League Cup Final that took place last Sunday.

Many of our students play in the U14 Girls team, including Amelia Flood, Hannah Knibb, Charlotte Clampitt – Dix, Maddie Bennett and Jemima Greco Turner. Playing in the opposing team (the League Champions) was Jamelia Bond.

Having seen off teams considerably higher in the league to get to the final, the Bath City team finally faced the League Champions, FC Chippenham Youth. With a healthy crowd of supporters, Bath battled hard and had a good run of play in the first half before reaching the break 1-0 down. The score line stayed this way for much of the second half but in the last 15 minutes, as Bath tried to get that equalising goal and extra time, Chippenham hit the net on the counter. A tough blow, added to in the dying minutes with a third. Yes, the League Champions kept their title, but I’m sure we can all be proud of this team’s resilience, courage and perseverance. Well done, girls!
Headteacher’s Open House
I am holding an Open House on Thursday 8th June from 5.00pm at our Upper Oldfield Park Campus. The topic for discussion will be our most recent Ofsted Report. I would like to invite parents and students to come along and participate in the workshops that we will be holding. We hope to gather ideas for three key area that we are focusing on to improve:
  • Anti-bullying strategies and their effectiveness
  • Tackling concerns and communications
  • Feedback on work and progress
I shall be writing to share details to all parents early next week.

Photoshoot with Year 7
It’s that time of year again, when we are starting to put documents together to welcome our new Year 7 students and their parents to our school. The fun part of this process is our annual photoshoot. Thank you to my Year 7 models, who are all wearing their uniforms with pride.

Twohigg’s Literacy Tips
(The 22nd in a regular series, in which aspects of English spelling and grammar are explained)

Do you want to increase the range and variety of your sentence structures? Then read on.

Students are often advised to add interest and variety to their sentences by adding extra adjectives. However, this needs to be done judiciously (carefully). Here is an example below to illustrate this.

The boy walked down the street.

The sad, melancholy, unhappy boy walked down the dark, dismal, dreary street.

Here the second sentence is not much more effective that the first, because the adjectives are not well chosen. Sad, melancholy and unhappy mean the same thing, so two of the adjectives are redundant (not needed) here. A similar criticism can be made of the choice of dark, dismal and dreary.

A better version of the sentence would be

The melancholy boy walked down the dismal street.

Often adjectives can be replaced by a well-chosen verb. Look at this sentence.

Angry and upset, Jenny stormed out of the room.

Here the adjectives angry and upset are redundant because the verb stormed implies being angry and upset. In this instance, the sentence would be more effective if it were simpler.

Jenny stormed from the room.

Twohigg’s Literacy Tips
(The 23rd in a regular series, in which aspects of English spelling and grammar are explained)

Do you confuse the words lie, lay and led? Then read on.

These words often cause confusion in speech and writing, particularly when they are used in the past tense.

1. To lie (to say something untrue).

The boy lied under oath.

2. To lie down, (for example on a bed)

I lay on the bed last night, but I could not sleep.

She was lying on the sofa, when I got home. (Please note it is not correct to say,
‘She was led on the sofa, when I got home!)

3. To lay (an egg, a table)

The chicken laid an egg.

4. To lead (an army, a team)

The General led his troops into battle.
Reminder - Theatre Club - 'War Horse' Bristol Hippodrome

Designed to give students ‘the edge’ in their GCSE Maths (Higher), there are ten sessions to choose from which have been carefully selected to support students between their first, second and third examinations.

The programme was a great success when we first launched in April. Here’s a selection of testimonials from those who attended:

Thank you for another great session. You have clearly shown the different formulae and how they work. This has been very useful. (Jack)
I actually get this now thank you! (Ben)

Each session last between 40 and 50 minutes and they take place via our online webinar platform. Students use the chat window to interact (all microphones and webcams are automatically disabled). Resources from each session will be available, including slides and a video. Evie Brady – Swimming Success!
Congratulations to Evie Brady in Year 10 who has achieved great success recently at the South West Regional Swimming Championships. Evie entered five events at the championships and from these races made four finals.

This was Evie’s best performance at the championships to date – well done Evie! Evie also performed extremely well at last weeks B&NES athletics competition and has been selected to represent B&NES at 1500m so all of her hard work and training really is paying off.

Good luck Evie for your upcoming swimming and athletics events!

PE Department

Trampolining Stars
Congratulations to Mia Hyden (Year 8) and Amiee Clark (Year 7) who have entered English championship trampolining qualifiers this year. At this event, Mia came 3rd out of 36 entrees and qualified for the English championship national league. Both Mia and Aimee are representing the south-west team later this month which is an outstanding achievement!

The PE department would like to wish Mia and Aimee the best of luck for their upcoming competition and can’t wait to hear how they get on!

PE Department

Congratulations Bobbi Cox!
A big well done to Bobbi Cox in 7F from the PE department for her recent sporting successes! Bobbi is an extremely committed sports person who trains for 13 hours a week in the pool in addition to her dance commitments and still manages to find the time to take part in P6 clubs and represent Hayesfield.

Bobbi has just completed her tap and ballet grade 3, both with merits which is a great achievement. At the weekend Bobbi also swam in her first ever South West Regionals, she worked hard to qualify all season as in September she had no regional qualifying times. Bobbi swam two races this weekend at Hengrove against clubs from all over the south-west and came 15th out of 30 in the 50m Breaststroke with a new PB and came 13th out of 50 in the 100m breaststroke missing the final by 00.11 of a second with another big PB!

The PE department would like to wish Bobbi the best of luck for her next swimming race in the regional competition and for her upcoming swim in the London Olympic pool during half term.

Well done Bobbi on all of your amazing achievements so far!

B&NES Leadership Academy
Congratulations to Lucy Chandler, Lucy Kale and Tilly Windsor in Year 9 who have been working alongside the B&NES leadership academy as the Hayesfield delegates this year.

This week the girls assisted the Primary Leadership Academy at the University of Bath completing a range of activities including:
  • Workshops on  ‘Change 4 Life Champions’ and the C4Life 10 minute shake up resource – how they can encourage the less active, to become more active!

  • SKY ‘Living for Sport’ Athlete Mentor – Beth Fisher – Inspirational address regarding her Welsh Hockey career
Whilst the Year 6s were trampolining, the Year 9/10’s had an additional meeting with Beth Fisher where she led a number of ‘ice-breaker’ activities.

The students are now planning to use their new experiences in their role as young leaders both at Hayesfield and in their upcoming events through the B&NES leadership academy.

Keep up the good work girls!

Requests to be excused from PE
Please could we remind parents that if your daughter is unable to fully participate in PE lessons due to an injury that a note needs to be written in her planner.

Your daughter can then show this note to her PE teacher at the start of her lesson and discuss her modified role.

The expectation is that all students get changed into PE kit and are involved in the learning in the lesson except in exceptional circumstances. Please do not phone reception and ask for messages to be passed on as we cannot guarantee that these will be read before the lesson.

International Visitors
Iris: Today we went on the second school trip. We went to the Longleat park. The Sky was blue. Many seagulls flapped their white wings in the sky. There were many insect statues in the park. Animals live in the hills. They enjoyed the sunlight and the fresh air. Zebras were running on the vast lawn. The sheep were eating green grass. We went to the beast area too. Beasts were hiding in the jungle and eating meat. Later, we went boating. The sea lions swam around us. They asked us for food. What an exciting day!

Zack: Yesterday morning, we went to the Longleat Safari Park and we had a great time there. We saw many kinds of animals in the park and enjoyed the fantastic scenery there. The most exciting moment was that we saw a lot of large animals when we were sitting in the coach. We could observe the expressions of wild animals clearly through the windows.

In the afternoon, we took a delicate train for sightseeing. we enjoyed the maze, bat cave, amazing house and adventure playground. The gardens and boat trip were both great. When we were on the boat, many sea lions leaped out of the water as if they were saying hello to us. It was quite fascinating. What a nice day!
Enrichment Week Request
As part of Enrichment Week, I am running Mind and Matter where students have an opportunity to come along and sew their favourite element into a giant periodic table as well as challenge their friends to different board games. I am currently short of board games so if you have any games at home that are languishing unused in a cupboard that you feel you could donate for this please could they be dropped into Brougham Hayes labelled for the attention of Mrs Whatley.
Reminder - Year 10 Parents’ Evening - Tuesday 13th June 2017
On Tuesday 13 June, we will be holding a Year 10 Parents’ Evening at Upper Oldfield Park Campus. This will provide you with an opportunity for you and your daughter to discuss her academic progress with her teachers.

Staff will be available for all or part of the evening between 4.00pm and 6.30pm, and the procedure will be organised through the usual appointments system, with students arranging times for parents to meet with subject teachers. The appointment page in the student planner should be used by your daughter to make appointments for you.

This is a very important Parents’ Evening for you and your daughter to attend, and an opportunity to discuss progress in this pivotal year at Hayesfield.

I will look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 13th June.
