Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal relishing chance to let new team loose on Premier League

Louis van Gaal says he is looking forward to moulding a new Manchester United team this summer.

The manager has been armed with a £150million transfer kitty as he looks to mount a challenge on four fronts next season.

In a revealing interview Van Gaal disclosed that he will work hard on the training ground to ensure new faces fit in - and added that he fears the day he retires because working with footballers keeps him young.

United's stars are now on their summer holidays but will head to America in July for a pre-season tour.

And Van Gaal, who is keen on Spurs striker Harry Kane and Southampton pair Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin, is looking forward to the trip across the Atlantic.

'It is enjoyable because you are preparing a team,' he said.

'You have to make a team probably - it's dependable how much new players are coming.'

The Dutchman did, however, warn against reading too much into results on tour, where United will face the likes of Barcelona and PSG.

'It's a little boring because the results in preparation are not so important,' he explained.

'Last year in the United States of America we have won everything and we played against big, top clubs and then we have to play our first match against Swansea City and we lose - that cannot happen next year.'

Last summer United zigzagged across the US in a hectic schedule arranged before Van Gaal arrived at the club.

This time around, however, they will be based on the west coast in Seattle and San Francisco - with much less travelling - at methodical Van Gaal's request.

'Now I think we have improved our America tour because we have two base camps, we are at other side of the coast so there are lower temperatures and we can build up our fitness better there,' he said.

'When you are always in the same city you don't have the time difference. Last year we had a lot of time differences so you cannot train properly. It was not good. Now we are in the same base camps so we have no time difference and also we have chosen our hotel nearby the training accommodation.

'It is now more easy to train twice a day and that is very important in pre season.'

Van Gaal, now 63, is in the second year of a three-year contract at Old Trafford. And he hinted that he may want to extend that arrangement and keep retirement at bay.

'What I love about my job is that I can communicate with young people,' he told the club's website.

'I am already an older man and the boys are holding me young, I think.

'That is also my greatest fear - when I stop as a manager and want to retire then I am lying in the sun but I don't communicate any more with young people.

'The best part of my job is that I can communicate and I can improve the talent of my players - that gives me a lot of joy.'
