Report: Kyrie Irving went days without speaking to his Cavs teammates at practice

Kyrie Irving’s contentious relationship with the Cavaliers has boiled over into a trade demand this offseason, but the frustrations may have been apparent months ago.

ESPN NBA reporter Dave McMenamin joined the BBall Breakdown Podcast this week to discuss the Irving situation, and he described the drama that brewed between Irving, LeBron James and the rest of the Cavaliers.

When asked about the rumored Irving trade to the Suns, McMenamin brought up Phoenix’s hire of James Jones — a longtime LeBron teammate. He relayed what Jones had seen from Irving during last season’s playoff run. According to McMenamin, Jones said Irving went days without speaking to his teammates.

“Phoenix, of course, hired James Jones this offseason. He’s been inside that locker room. He’s seen Kyrie Irving — I think I reported this on SportsCenter this week — he saw Kyrie Irving in the playoffs this year — in between the first round when they beat Indiana and the second round when they played Toronto — go consecutive days without speaking to a teammate at practice. On that stage. It’s one thing to say people go through ups and downs during the regular season. But when you get to the playoffs, when the main thing is the main thing, and we’re brothers and pulling together to get this thing done, even at that level there were still things that made him sullen or reclusive from his teammates. I’m not so sure if Phoenix would be interested in that type of deal.”

But at the same time, it’s difficult to read into how someone behaves at practice during a small window. The Cavaliers eliminated the Pacers on April 23 and started their series with Toronto on May 1. If Irving stopped talking to his teammates at practice during that timeframe, it was something that got resolved by May 10. He was seen dancing with LeBron during a workout dance party at the Cavs’ facility on May 10.

So, something changed within two weeks.

The Suns hired Jones as vice president of basketball operations back in July.
