Family first – that’s what Nick Cannon says the sentiment is even though he and Mariah Carey have called it quits.

The America’s Got Talent host, who’s the face of Snapple’s new #LOVESNAPPLE campaign, tells PEOPLE his and Carey’s status as friendly exes is “truly” due to their children, 4-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

As for their secret to coparenting?

“Just staying focused and putting priorities in order,” says Cannon, 34. “Being able to just step out and control whatever you can control, and the things that you can’t, you just keep it moving.”

The amicable couple – who were married for six years before filing for divorce in December – have spent several recent holidays together, and Cannon even took to Instagram Sunday to wish Care, a happy Mother’s Day, writing, “I will forever be in debt to you for blessing me” with their children.

“At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. You celebrate one another and celebrate family – you take time out for those moments,” adds the rapper-actor.

While Cannon gears up for the tenth season of AGT this season, Carey’s got her plate full, too, taking up residence at Caesars Palace for her Las Vegas residency, Mariah #1 to Infinity. (Her ex says he “absolutely” plans on making it out for a show!)

Despite their busy schedules, Cannon says the kids always come first. “It is what it is, and you just keep it as balanced as you can.”
