New Business In Atlanta Tech Village Sells Pre-Owned Apple Product

Ernest Duncan opens new Experimac location

It was almost fate that Ernest Duncan was going to become a small-business owner sometime in his life.

Whether through his family genes or Duncan’s long association with non-profit organizations where entrepreneurship is part of their daily fabric, Duncan has entered this next stage of his business career with all the tools for success.

In August, Duncan opened the doors to Experimac, a one-of-a-kind retail storefront concept that specializes in sales of pre-owned Apple® computers, devices and much more. Experimac is located at 800 Peachtree St., NE.

For Duncan, the popularity of the Atlanta Tech Village and the reliance we all have on technology today are just a few examples of what excites him about the potential of Experimac.

“The emergence of the Tech Village in Midtown is an exciting opportunity for those of us willing to risk our time and effort to build a tech community,” Duncan said. “Likewise, the popularity and dependence we have on our smartphones is here to stay. They have become part of our daily lives.”

Duncan had previously spent 15 years serving as the chief financial officer of several non-profit organizations. He had also served as the procurement officer for several of those organizations, which gave him a strong understanding of the needs of a typical business owner.

In turn, Duncan is an adjunct faculty member at several universities, teaching leadership, entrepreneurship and strategy.

“Entrepreneurship is part of the DNA of non-profits,” Duncan said. “I’ve also grown up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents, grandparents and other family members have owned businesses throughout their lives. My role has been one of trusted advisor and counsel to others. I decided to take the leap myself and join them in becoming a full-time business owner.”

Experimac not only specializes in the sale of pre-owned Apple® computers and devices, but also offers repair of laptops, phones and tablets; trade-ins of existing devices; software and system updates; and sales of accessories.

A loyal Apple® customer, Duncan is well aware of the popularity of its many products.

“I was noticing the trend to trade in your phone every two years and I often wondered what happened to the older models,” Duncan said. “I started doing some research and learned that there’s a strong market for pre-owned devices. I thought it would be great to be part of the process.”

Since Experimac specializes in selling used products, particularly used Apple® products, the products can be sold at a price point that is accessible to a much-wider range of customers. When customers enter competing retail stores that sell new computers, smartphones and tech equipment, only one out of every 100 or so people actually purchase something because of the high price point, but they are much more likely to buy at Experimac.

Experimac customers typically enjoy average savings of 60 percent on pre-owned Apple® products over big-box retailers. And Experimac takes the risk out of purchasing pre-owned equipment with a 90-day guarantee. If something breaks, Experimac will repair or replace the defective part at no cost.
