SOX9 switch links regeneration to fibrosis at the single-cell level in mammalian kidneys https://lnkd.in/dMa7nQ-2 Activation of SOX9 in plays a crucial role in regenerating kidney cells during acute kidney injury (AKI). This study discovered that some cells activate SOX9, which then switch off upon monolayer formation, aiding in healthy tissue recovery. While the cells that lack the ability to deactivate SOX9 generated substantial single-cell WNT activity to activate adjacent fibroblasts, thus driving AKI to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Identifying SOX9 as a pivotal factor in cell fate post-injury enhances understanding of renal regeneration and offers potential therapeutic targets to halt CKD progression.
