Athlete of the Year: Sydney Mosley, Monrovia, senior

Mike Knowles took one look at Sydney Mosley and knew that the then-sophomore was competing in the wrong event.

“When she first came to us she was a jumper,” Knowles recalled. “All she did was the triple jump and long jump. No one ever thought of her as a runner. But then she was running at the same pace as with the (other) kids. I said, ‘This girl can run.’”

Mosley ran all the way to the CIF State meet and Star-News track and field athlete of the year honors.

She advanced to the state meet three consecutive years in the 100 meter hurdles and finished fifth with a personal-best time of 13.70 seconds a little less than two weeks ago.

“I’m so happy with my accomplishments this year,” she said. “My senior year, to finally make it to the state finals and to actually place and to be on the podium; overall I feel blessed. I was not supposed to make the state finals, so I feel accomplished.”

Mosley re-wrote the school and Rio Hondo League record books in her three years. She advanced to the state meet three consecutive years.

“All the years were a road to determination and self-motivation,” she said. “I was so blessed to actually have the opportunity to run for Monrovia.”

Mosley, who will run for Arizona State next year, won the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title and was second in the CIF-SS Masters Meet. She won a league title in the 300 hurdles and anchored the Wildcats’ winning 4×100 relay team. She won the 100 hurdles title three consecutive years and finished second in the CIF-SS finals in the event in her sophomore and junior years.
