Henderson animal shelter achieves record-high save rate for 2018

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The City of Henderson’s Animal Care and Control Facility may be recognized as a ‘no-kill’ shelter for 2018 after it achieved a 91.5 percent save rate.

For the year, not a single animal was euthanized due to lack of space, and of the 4,297 animals brought to the shelter, 823 were returned home to their owners and 2,180 were adopted into “forever” homes.

Henderson cites adoption events, incentives, traditional media coverage and social media as factors leading to an increase in shelter adoptions.

The shelter, which never turns away any animal, also saw a decrease in intake thanks to pets having microchips, owners being educated in rescue information and the continued enforcement of Henderson’s spay and neuter law, among other thing.

Danielle Harney, Acting Animal Control administrator, released the following statement:

The City of Henderson Animal Care and Control staff realize that our no-kill status in 2018 is a huge accomplishment. This historic record builds on Henderson’s continued efforts to make our city more humane for pets, and we thank the community for saving the lives of our shelter pets.

More than 80 people regularly volunteer at the shelter, logging about 7,100 hours per year.

These volunteers help improve the animals’ behavior and adoptability by providing exercise, grooming and socialization to cats, dogs and rabbits.

To adopt a pet from the Henderson shelter, fill out an adoption application here and pay a one-time fee based on the species: $90 for dogs, $80 for cats and $35 for rabbits.

These fees include routine vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchip ID and registration ad a rabies tag.
