You are welcome here. Jesus said, "Love God and love your neighbor as yourself." We, the congregation of Newberg First United Methodist Church, follow this commandment by welcoming all people of any race, ethnicity, identity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, economic status, religion, or life situation into the life and ministries of the church. With open minds we affirm that all people are created in the image of God and all are worthy of God's love and grace. We welcome you to join us in our faith journey toward greater love, understanding, and mutual respect. Come, grow in grace with us.

Pastor’s Discretionary Fund
Many of you may not know, but there is a Pastor’s Discretionary Fund that the Pastor can use to help people. Over the past year, the Discretionary Fund has been used for many things:
- PGE Bill Assistance and rent assistance (3 people)
- giving Fred Meyer gift cards to those in need (30 people)
- helping someone with Trimet tickets (1 person)
- helping someone with funeral expenses
- gas for travelers (4 people)
- prescription help (2 people)
- helping a homeless youth get home
- helping an elderly mentally unstable person get assistance through advocacy
- Staff/Volunteer training
Let me tell you stories of success. The homeless youth that was helped by purchasing a bus ticket to get him to Texas is now employed, clean, and sober! An elderly person is now able, with proper treatment, to live semi-independently! Funeral expenses were covered for an elderly person without means. These and many more people were helped when they were often at their lowest. This fund does great things for the people in our community.
Donations to the fund are always accepted and appreciated! If you’d like to donate, make your check to the church marking in the memo line “Discretionary Fund.” Thank you! Pastor Cathy

News from Meg
School is almost out… and that means SUMMER in Newberg!
For the last couple of years we’ve offered Water Wednesday for our young people. This year we are changing it up and doing
(focusing on Wonder and Water)
Every Thursday 1:00-3:00pm, June 29- August 31, Kindergarten-5th graders at the church. We will do water play and games outside (depending on weather), games, lesson and activity time, and snacks inside. Lessons are focused on the parables of Jesus, and the WONDERful news Jesus taught.
Additional adult volunteers are needed. Meg is developing the lessons and activities, and please contact her if you can help 1 or 2 Thursday afternoons.

PET PEEVES OF A CHURCH VISITOR
First impressions matter — big time! Sometimes there’s no coming back from a bad experience. As someone who visits lots of churches for the first time, I have some pet peeves to share that I hope will help your church.
Parking lot attendants (NFUMC does not currently have these – interested??)
Nothing drives me crazier than seeing parking lot attendants standing next to each other......
Greeters
Have you ever experienced over-zealous greeters? Greeters that freak you out because they’re too happy, too nosy, or too obnoxious......
Ushers
I think we oversimplify when it comes to training ushers. I can’t tell you how many churches I’ve visited or consulted with who had told their ushers “Stand here and give each person a bulletin as they pass.......”
Hands-free
I have one last bone to pick with all team members, and this is a big one! Make sure your servant leaders are hands-free. This means they shouldn’t be holding a cup of coffee or their cell phone....
