Spelling Bee

Hayesfield hosted the very first Inter-School Spelling Bee last Friday, and it was wonderful to see students from across the City enjoying a bit of friendly competition together.

Congratulations go to Ralph Allen School, who claimed 1st and 2nd place. Our very own Caitlin in Year 8 secured 3rd prize on behalf of Hayesfield.

An enormous thank you to Ms Mountcastle who organised this ground-breaking event for us. All schools have agreed that we should do more events which bring students from different schools together, so this is the start of something even bigger!

Bike Bath

The annual Bike Bath Sportive took place last Sunday and I am sure lots of you enjoyed participating with friends or family. I had the pleasure of taking out my own father this year, and together we tackled the 50 mile route. I was delighted to meet up with our Hayesfield Cycle Club on the outskirts of the City and we cycled the final few roads together.

I would like to thank Miss Jefferies and Mrs Whipp who took the girls our for the 25 mile route. For almost all of the girls this was the most they had ever cycled and I know the hot weather did not make this an easy challenge. It was all worthwhile though when we received our beautiful medals and had our photograph taken with an Olympic medallist  😀

Mrs Beasley

Thank you to all of you who contributed to the Book I created for Mrs Beasley so that we could all share our thanks with her. I had pages and pages of contributions, which truly reflected how she has been valued in our school. We shall all miss her immensely, and nobody more so than me, but look forward to welcoming her back in her new role in September.

For Parents:

Thank you so much for all your kind words and good wishes for my retirement. Miss Yates has made a book for me which holds the comments she received on her secret mission with you! I saw it last night and was a weeping mass half way through! Thank you.

Uniform:

On another note, some of you will be receiving letters about uniform over the coming week. These are being sent in a supportive spirit to enable you to ensure you buy the correct replacements for September….and not what ‘somebody’ would like you to buy!

Hayesfield Girls’ School hosts the first Bath Inter-School Spelling Bee

Earlier this year, Miss Yates asked me whether I could take the Hayesfield House School Spelling Bee and transform it into an Inter-School competition where the schools of Bath would hold heats to select their three best spellers in Year 7 and Year 8 who would then compete in a Bath final at Hayesfield School and this set in motion the quest to find the best spellers in Bath.

Six schools across Bath accepted the challenge and students from Beechen Cliff, King Edward's School, Hayesfield Girls’ School, Oldfield School, Ralph Allen and St Gregory’s battled to be crowned Spelling Bee Champion on Friday 29th June in the Roper Theatre.

The audience of friends, parents, teachers as well as The Mayor of Bath ….. and The Mayoress…….watched on apprehensively as the remarkably calm 18 students competed in three rounds of elimination. In the first round students had to spell three words correctly to go through to the second round. A testament to the high standard of contestants, most students achieved full marks and had to go through to a tense tie-breaker, where they had ten seconds to spell words such as belligerence, beleaguer and eloquence. Finally the field was narrowed down to six competitors, including Year 8 student Caitlin Bellworthy from Hayesfield Girls’ School, Lily Greenhough, Alexander Lea and Fiona Thet from Ralph Allen School, Mohamed Hussan from Beechen Cliff and Ella O’Shea from St Gregory’s School.

In the second round, words were trickier and contestants were not allowed to use a whiteboard. Words like ‘gauge’, ‘exercise’ and ‘humorous’ narrowed the field further to two students who got both words right and automatically qualified for the third round. Another tie-breaker between Caitlin Bellworthy, Mohamed Hussan and Lily Greenhough saw Caitlin, from Hayesfield, take third place.

The two finalists, Fiona Thet and Alexander Lea, both from Ralph Allen went on to the third round - a sudden death round, as seen in the popular American Spelling Bees. Alexander stumbled on ‘convalescence’ and Fiona spelled that word and the following word ‘silhouette’ correctly to be crowned Bath Inter-School Spelling Bee Champion. All competitors received a certificate, presented to them by Ms Yates and The Mayor of Bath and the winners received book tokens, generously donated to us by Mr B’s Book Emporium. The winner also received a Spelling Bee trophy.

It was a fierce competition, judged expertly by Ms Twohigg and Ms Whitehead, who had to tot up scores and check spellings. Thank you to them and also to everyone who helped and supported the competition, especially Ms Bell-West, who introduced the competition and helped me to plan, Mr Lee for his excellent photography skills and the sixth formers who met and greeted the contestants and their supporters. We are already look forwards to the next competition and reclaiming the Spelling Bee trophy and winning title!

Ms Mountcastle

LEAP September 2018

We are currently in the process of preparing the programme of activities for our Period 6 next year – LEAP. It looks even more exciting and enriching than ever before and we hope when we get the Booklets ready you will all agree with us. The Staff and some of the Sixth Form students have worked well this year to provide a variety of activities for all year groups and we feel it has gone from strength to strength. In September we have some new activities being organised as well as new launches of some really important ones.

Here are some examples:
  • School Magazine
  • Environmental Change and also Eco Schools
  • Typography
  • Excelsior! Comic Book Club
  • MedSoc
The list by no means stops there and we are very interested to hear from any students of activities they would like to run and we will see what can be done to accommodate them. Finally, through some Staff, Parent and Student consultation, we have looked at the booking in process and registers. We will therefore be launching the new software system to replace SIMs Activities to enable a smooth booking process that is robust and fair.

Many thanks

Ms Twohigg

Read your way to English Language success

Dear Year 10
Some of the best (and nicest) prep you can do to be English Language ready is read. Read books, read newspapers (all kinds- you will need to know and appreciate the different conventions), read magazines, read reviews, read speeches… Quite simply: read voraciously, read widely and form opinions.

There are some wonderful sites out there to help you keep track of books and get personalised reading recommendations (try Goodreads). There are also plenty of places to find reviews on the ‘hottest’ summer reads of 2018 as a starting point to guide your subsequent reading ventures.

So kick back over this summer, get lost in a lovely reading gem and know that in doing so, you are already well on the way to acing that language exam (and really, life in general).

Art Exhibition Reviews

Having put up our students fantastic work for the Gala evening we decided to keep the exhibition up for a few days to let more students see the GCSE and A Level work.

Our Art classes have been writing reviews of the exhibition and drawing from it but it also has been lovely to welcome our friends from the English Department to also see the work and write exhibition reviews.

This review was written by Miss Langford- Lacney's Year 8 English class:

"We were very pleased to get a chance to see the impressive array of portraits on display in art during the last week of term. The artists had used very interesting paint colours (blues and dark reds!) to paint their sitters, which seemed like unusual choices but did create convincing skin tones. Lots of the images dealt with the same theme but again the artists creativity meant there were a huge range of interpretations in their final pieces. The political caricatures and captions were really funny and made us think and it was lovely to see places we could recognise from the local area in our own art gallery.

Thank you for sharing all of your work with us. We were very impressed!"

SOLO SINGER OPPORTUNITY

Perform ‘Walking in the Air’ from ‘The Snowman’ with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Sunday 16th December 2018 3.00PM & 7.00PM, Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts
We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity as part of BSO’s Rising Talent Programme for two talented young singers to perform a solo of ‘Walking in the Air’ at the screening of The Snowman accompanied by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Performance dates
There are two performance opportunities: one afternoon and one evening performance at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on Sunday 16th December 2018. The two soloists will each be assigned a performance after the audition process has finished.

Applicant requirements
Applications are open to girls and boys aged between 9 – 13 years old on the day of the audition. Please note that only boys with treble voices should apply.

Previous applicants
We welcome all applicants from previous year’s auditions to re-apply this year.

How to apply
The applicant’s parent or guardian must complete an online form located on the BSO’s Rising Talent website, which you can find via the link below.

The deadline for completion of forms is Wednesday 12th September at 5pm.
After this deadline, all applicants will be invited to attend a morning group audition (approximately 15-20 children per group). If they are short-listed, they will attend a solo audition in the afternoon.

Link to form
https://www.bsolive.com/snowman-2018/

Audition information and preparation
Auditions will be held at St. Nicholas Church, 30 Wareham Road, Corfe Mullen, BH21 3LE on Saturday 29th September 2018. Applicants will be assigned a group audition time in the morning, and those who are short-listed will be auditioned separately in the afternoon.

All children attending the group auditions will be required to sing ‘Walking in the Air’ by Howard Blake. Applicants must also prepare an additional solo piece (lasting no more than 5 minutes) to sing if they are short-listed for an audition in the afternoon.

There will be an accompanist for the morning group auditions and the afternoon solo auditions. Applicants must provide the piano accompaniment part or bring a CD backing track for their prepared solo piece. Unaccompanied solo pieces will also be accepted.

Applicants should learn ‘Walking in the Air’ from memory, but there will be a lyric sheet projected onto a screen to act as a prompt. It is not compulsory to perform their short-listed solo piece from memory.

Please note that only those who attend the audition will be considered, as unfortunately we cannot accept video or voice recordings as a substitute for a live audition.

Concert rehearsals
Rehearsals for both soloists will take place on the day of the concert on Sunday 16th December in Poole. Both soloists for the Lighthouse concerts will need to be available for the afternoon and evening concert as they will be each other’s understudy. If you have any further questions about this opportunity, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Frame request from the Photography Department

For an activity later this term, the Photography Department would really welcome any donations of unwanted clip frames. They can be any size but A3 or smaller are more useful. It must only be frames that easily come apart and go back together.

Many Thanks

PE

Injured/Illness in PE lessons

The PE Department would like to highlight the expectations of students in terms of their PE lessons if they are injured.

As a Department our aim is for all students to achieve their personal best and to work hard towards achieving their sporting ambitions. This means that we want students to be participating in lessons as fully as possible at all times to ensure their best progression.

If students are unwell or injured for a lesson, it is important that they still bring their PE kit, get changed and have a conversation with their PE teacher about the role they can do in the lesson whether this be to try participating practically or coaching and supporting. Either way, PE kit is required and, therefore, students should be prepared and ready with this for all lessons.

Where students have long term more advanced injuries, we would require a medical note from a doctor or physiotherapist to state the injury and period of non-participation. We would expect, where possible, students to get changed for their PE lessons but understand that in some extreme cases, e.g. broken limbs or back injuries, students may be unable to change. We would still, however, expect students to arrive for their PE lessons where they will be given suitable coaching or written tasks.

Gum Shields in PE

A reminder that Gum Shields are essential items for PE and students must be prepared and bring these for their PE lessons.

A reminder that the PE Department sell gum shields for £2 in a range of sizes for students to purchase. These must be brought ahead of time, before PE lessons, as they require moulding..

Kit Expectations

A reminder to all students that Year 7 & 8 should be wearing the new style black and purple PE kit and Years 9-11 should be wearing either the old or new style PE kit for both their lessons and after school clubs. Leggings are only permitted for Years 10 and 11 and these should be plain black sports leggings.

For students studying hockey this term it is essential that they have a gum shield, which can be purchased from the PE office for £2.

It is essential that students have their PE kit named as this helps to return lost kit to its owner.

Fitness Suite Notice

In line with the terms and conditions signed as part of Sixth Form student induction, it is essential that Sixth Form students use the fitness suite in line with the rules and induction they have received and must not use this facility alone.

Sixth Form students should sign in at reception before using the fitness suite.

Students are not permitted to use the facility without having received an induction from Hayesfield staff this academic year.

Science Faculty

3, 2, 1…Lift-off!

Eleven girls from Year 9 were shooting for the stars this week at the first annual Inter-School Rocketry Competition at Beechen Cliff School.

Along with other local students, the Hayesfield girls learned about the science behind rocket design before putting these ideas into practice building their own rockets. As well as honing their engineering skills, the Hayesfield girls also brushed up their presentation-giving prowess as they shared their rocket designs with the other schools.

All three of the Hayesfield girls’ rockets launched and flew successfully – an achievement in itself – although they fell short of the top spots for height and time of flight. Our students were praised by the judges for their presentation and design skills, and did Mr Attwood proud.

Fledgling rocketeers should keep an eye out for next year’s competition, where Hayesfield rockets may soar to even higher heights!

Winners will receive a free family ticket (two adults and two children/teen tickets – worth over £200!) to the Boondocks festival held on 20–21 July 2018 near Malmesbury (http://theboondocksfestival.co.uk/). First World War Centenary Battlefield Tour

Fri 22nd - Mon 25th June 2018

Two Year 10 students, Ysobel Gouriet and Daniela Pinna, took part in a trip to the First World War Battlefields in Belgium and France last weekend, based in Ypres. Along with Miss Chappell, they joined students from all over the South of England, visiting many historical battlefields, war memorials and cemeteries, focussing mainly on the area of the Somme.

Having spent the Saturday afternoon visiting a cemetery and the Passchendaele Memorial Museum, that evening they attended the daily Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, which was a very moving experience. The following morning they visited the Newfoundland Memorial Park in Beaumont Hamel, followed by visiting the Sunken Lane, where some iconic footage was filmed at the time. They later visited the towering Thiepval Memorial.

On the Monday before heading home, they visited a German cemetery as well as the famous Tyne Cot cemetery, before visiting an art installation created by members of the public and which commemorates the 600,000 people who lost their lives in the Somme Battlefields during WW1.

It was an amazing experience.

Mrs Pinnegar’s Book of the Week

(The twenty-eighth in a series in which the School Librarian recommends a book available in Hayesfield School Library)

“The Arrival” by Shaun Tan
This graphic novel succeeds in capturing the immigrant experience with stunning images which combine realism and surrealism. They are all the more moving and powerful for the absence of words.

“What drives so many to leave everything behind and journey to a mysterious country, a place without family or friends, where everything is nameless and the future is unknown. This silent graphic novel is the story of every migrant, every refugee, every displaced person, and a tribute to all those who have made the journey.”

A copy is available for reference from the School Library. This title is included in the Library’s current book display of “Refugee Stories” and is also part of the Graphic Fiction collection which includes a wide variety of titles in this genre.

Exciting Hosting Opportunity

Do you have a spare room

Due to the success of our Euroclass Programme, we are looking for caring and welcoming Hayesfield families to host our Norwegian 6th Form students for the duration of the Autumn Term 2018.

The group is a mix of boys and girls who are looking for accommodation within Bath and easy access to the school whilst they study here to experience British culture and improve their English.

The students would be hosted individually within a home from home environment, which provides daily home cooked meals and a bedroom with a study area. Ideally with an en-suite so they have their own privacy and space but not essential if you can accommodate an extra person in your home. We provide a generous weekly allowance of £180 per week as tax-free living expenses.

If you would like an application form or would like to find out more information then please contact Fiona Harrison via the Sixth Form Office or email international@hayesfield.com
