Could you please expand on how can companies move away from a silo approach to R&D, and put in place multi-disciplinary teams?

To be able to succeed with defining what to develop and what will be relevant in the future it is critical that companies adopt a process in the Front End where the different disciplines and functions in the organisation take part. The process should include forming a group consisting of representative from Marketing, Sales, Technology, industrialisation, development, production, design, etc… with the main goal to gather Information and Insights, analyse the information and define focus areas or domains that are or will be relevant to the company.

Do you find that you need to connect differently with consumers than in the past and if yes in what ways?

It is important to connect to and understand all the parties in the value chain, from our direct customers to the end users, it is the only way where we can develop products and services that will add value and differentiate our products from the competitors. Each party in the value chain should be approached in a way that is beneficial to them and feel that they are contributing to making better products and services.

How closely do different departments collaborate on innovation?

All the departments representing the different disciplines should be directly involved in defining the focus areas and domains so that we can identify what is relevant and right things to develop. The different departments and disciplines are each an equal partner  in a project contributing with their specific knowledge to be able to have a complete and valuable picture of what will the world for our company will look like and hence what will be important and relevant for us to develop and launch.

What are the cross-functional dynamics in your organization?

It is in the intersection of the different disciplines that new innovative solutions will be found. The new products ideas are the results of the interaction between the different disciplines, these dynamics are like the spark plugs in an engine.

What would you like to achieve by attending the 6th Annual Market-Driven Innovation in R&D Conference?

To listen and understand how other companies are solving the issues of what and how to launch new products, the fact of defining the right things to develop and the right way to launch them in the market.
