I came across a phrase -hold sb to account that i don't know. The whole sentence is as following"
The message is very clear which is the violence we've seen is appalling and unacceptable and I have this very clear message for people in that regime, this warning for people in that regime, which is the world is watching you and the world will hold you to account. And Britain through the United Nations, is pressing for asset seizures, for travel bans, for sanctions, for all of the things we can do to hold those people to account.""

i will appreciate for your help

  • Welcome to the forum, sweetface122.

To hold someone to account is to consider someone to be liable or responsible for something. In other words, they will have to answer (e.g. to a court of law or to public opinion) for their actions.

    Example:
He will not escape justice. He will be held to account for the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
