Tagged “The Heart of Giving” to further supplement the organization’s efforts to ensure that low income individuals and families will have advocates to speak for them and protect their rights, the evening will be launched with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception where guests can view such varied works as the acclaimed artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damian Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol as well as a Silent Auction of items from many of the South Florida community’s fine establishments.
The 2012 Equal Justice Leadership Awards will be presented to the Honorable Rosemary Barkett, United States Circuit Judge, 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and Dean Patricia D. White, University of Miami School of Law, in recognition of excellence demonstrated in protecting the rights of the South Florida Community’s most vulnerable individuals and families. Stephen Zack, Esq., immediate past president of the American Bar Association, will speak on behalf of Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc.
The Campaign for Justice, co-chaired by Raoul Cantero (White and Case), Tracy Nichols (Holland & Knight) and Bob Parks (Law Office of Robert L. Parks), was created to raise community awareness about and support for Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. in order to keep the doors of justice open to low income Americans as traditional funding for legal services declines.
“We must ensure that access to our nation’s system of justice—a cornerstone of our society-- does not become a luxury” said Marcia K. Cypen, LSGMI Executive Director. “Local community support will help LSGMI ensure that the promise of equal justice is kept in both good times and bad.”

Annually LSGMI provides services benefitting 30,0000 of the most vulnerable members of our community-- women, children, seniors, veterans returning from combat, domestic violence victims, people with disabilities, and individuals undergoing foreclosures or other loss of housing. LSGMI offers these vulnerable populations their only opportunity for help with critical legal problems including mortgage foreclosures, evictions, disability benefits, unemployment compensation, education for children with special needs, and consumer problems. With some of the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the nation and nearly 550,000 individuals in our community struggling to get by on incomes below or near the poverty line, the need for free legal services in our community has never been greater and continues to grow as the economic recovery stalls.
