Take a guided nature walk through breathtaking Manomin Park, where historic Rice Creek flows into the mighty Mississippi River, hear poems by acclaimed Poets Rosie Peters and Teresa Ortiz, and then find your favorite spot in the park to sit and write poetry or create a drawing of your own. Free and Open to ALL ages and abilities! RAIN OR SHINE!!

Wavelets Creative and Positively Fridley present a series of FREE outdoor art + nature workshops at Manomin Park / Rice Creek in Fridley, MN.  Led by Artistic Director James Everest and Naturalist Jenny Winkelman, with special guest teaching artist poets Teresa Ortiz and Rosetta "Rosie" Peters. The POETRY workshop will bring us together amongst the towering Cottonwood trees on the banks of Rice Creek and the Mississippi River to create site-specific poems for the Fall Sound Garden performance installation at Manomin Park on Sunday, Sept 30. (The following Sunday). Come tap into the the powerful peace and ecological wonder,  learning about one of the most important rivers in the world, and the wildlife that makes this place home - and tell your own story, write your own poetry in this sacred place.

TEACHING ARTIST BIOS:

Teresa Ortiz is a native of Mexico and an immigrant to Minnesota; a mother and an educator; a writer / poet / spoken word artist.  I consider myself a very spiritual person who is inspired by life, nature, the earth and the people I love. My poems are personal, descriptive, collective and political; they aim to describe our identity, the land where we live and the lives that have touched my own. I write in Spanish and in English because I want to honor the language of my ancestors and the languages of my children. I am a member of Palabristas Latino Spoken Word Collective. My poems have appeared in a couple of chapbooks and I authored “Never Again a World Without Us: Voices of Maya Women in Chiapas, Mexico.” In 2017, I began also performing my poetry as part of the iNMiGRATiON performance series in the Twin Cities.

Rosetta “Rosie” Peters is a poet, author, public speaker, and activist, and has performed her poetry at several venues including The Loft, The Black Dog, The Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater, and as part of the iNMiGRATiON series at the Midtown Farmers Market and Square Lake Festival. Rosetta’s plans are to continue on to the University of Minnesota where she will pursue a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a second major in Native American Studies. She is excited to be a part of the revitalization of her ancestral language, Dakota, which is currently being taught at the University of Minnesota. She is of Yankton, Crow Creek, and Oglala descent. Rosetta hopes to learn the language and pass it on to future generations. She is a single mother of six beautiful children, four daughters and two sons.
