Enrichment courses are taught in person at the CWA classrooms or offsite and may include field trips and/or online work.

Participation, demonstration of knowledge and successful completion of a course will earn credit toward graduation.

In the event a class fills up, priority is given to upper grade level students needing the class for graduation.

Not all of the classes are open to 8th graders. Please check with the teacher if the class is open to middle school students.

INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basic components of leadership. Throughout this course, students will learn and apply their understanding of leadership with their own experiences and abilities. The course will cover Leadership Styles, Communication, Working with Others, Group Process & Management, Organization & Planning and Involvement in a Student Government. In addition to developing individual leadership skills, students will engage in committees and other aspects of the CWA Student Leadership Team. Upon completion of this course, students are eligible to become members of the CWA Student Leadership Team. REMARKABLE JOURNEYS: This class integrates English and social studies by examining the inspiring true story of one boy’s journey from a war-torn country to a refugee camp and then to America. We will examine the themes of family bonds, the payoff of hard work, the importance of heritage, and the complex world of American culture. Students will reflect on where they are from, who they are now, and what they might become in the future. We will read the short autobiography, 'Of Beetles and Angels' by Mawi Asgedom during the class. You can preview the book at Amazon.com. RIVER SCIENCE:  In this interdisciplinary and field experience based course, students will spend 10 class sessions in the science focus before switching to the Language Arts focus. An online class will be assigned to you upon being enrolled in this class. One book per term is also assigned as a reading requirement.  A critical component to this class will be our “in the field days”. We will be traveling as a group to different creek sites and  learning about our local watershed and important environmental issues. Please note that field days are rain or shine. Students will need to be prepared for the weather and dress appropriately.  (0.5 Science Credit)    Classes begin Wednesday, September 18th at 10:30. ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY:  In this class we will spend 10 weeks exploring the Pacific Northwest to experience and learn about the journey of the salmon. We will use an on-line curriculum to pair with our field trips and provide opportunity to write about real life and shared experiences. We will read and discuss with our peers the book Another Way the River Has by local author Robin Cody. Each student will craft a final writing piece around our theme of salmon migration. One class involves beginner level kayaking to view salmon and steelhead at  Willamette Falls. We ask for a $10 donation for class materials. HEROES & VILLAINS: In this class we will explore, analyze, and discuss various aspects of heroes and villains. Heroes and villains come in many forms, but sometimes, somebody’s hero is somebody else’s villain. Students will determine what characteristics define each, and look at various examples, both real and fictional. Topics to be covered include defining heroes and villains, superheroes, historical figures, celebrities, everyday heroes, Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Heroes Journey’, among others. EVERY SHOT COUNTS - Golf Class:  Grades 8-12.  CWA is partnering with The First Tee of Portland and the Children's Course in Gladstone to offer a Golf Enrichment Class to CWA students.  Golf clubs, professional instructors and CWA Coach John Grant will be provided to teach students proper golf safety, swing, rules, and etiquette.  Students will have access to driving range, chipping and putting greens and then play nine holes for their culminating class to demonstrate skills learned.    Before a student can participate they MUST:  1. Signup on this CWA Enrichment Class Registration  2. Complete First Tee Waiver (see below, including parent signature)  3. Pay fee of $35  4. WRD 098: INTRODUCTORY READING & WRITING 2: COLLEGE PREPARATION at Clackamas Community College, Harmony Campus. Are you ready to get ready for college level writing? This class is taught by a college professor at the college and your classmates will all be fellow CWA students!  This course builds on reading and writing skills to prepare students to be successful in College Composition,  WRITING-121. Students will read shorter college-level texts and create short essays responding to them. Topics include how to follow a writing process, perform basic research, work in a writing group, and reflect on one's own learning.  .5 High School LA credit.  Course meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00am to 10:50am September 30th to December 14th, 2019.  In order to take WRD 98 at CCC, please do the following:                                                            1. Apply online to Clackamas Community College and receive your student ID number by email.                                                                          2. Take ID number along with photo ID to the Harmony campus of CCC, Testing Center and take the Writing Placement Test. Accuplacer Next Generation Reading and Writing placement test practice link can be found on the Early College Options page of CWA’s website.               3.Turn in a copy of your placement scores and CWA +College Application by Friday September 20th to Susan Roberts or Esther Verbruggen to register for the course.  (Register sooner to ensure a seat; class will close when full.)
