This is a form for you to indicate an interest in volunteering for the event. High schoolers can receive volunteering hours for doing so. Here are the details of the event. Absolutely no prior experience with robotics is required to volunteer.
On the weekend of August 11th and 12th, 2018 Google will be sponsoring a 2 day workshop for high school and middle school girls (students currently in 5th grade going to 6th grade are eligible) and their teachers/mentors who are interested in learning about the VEX Robotics Program.
The two day VEX Robotics Girl Powered Workshop in is a collaboration between the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and Google. In the VEX Robotics Competition (
https://www.vexrobotics.com/vexedr/competition) teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. This 2-day workshop will be held at the Google Campus in Sunnyvale, CA.
This is open to any girl who is a beginner or has very limited experience with robotics and would like to learn more about designing, building and programming robots. If we run out of room, TEAM and GROUP signups will be given higher priority over individual registrations. A mentor/teacher being part of a team registration is needed.
If you are an individual participant we will pick a group of girls to be a part of your team and have one of the parents assigned to this group as a mentor. Please indicate if a parent is able volunteer as one of the mentors for this team. The mentor should be an adult over the age of 18 and should be able to participate in the workshops on both days. A group can be anywhere from 2 to 5 girls. If your group is larger than 5 register them as two groups.
No prior experience is required for either the participant or the mentor. There will be a small fee of $50 per participant (no fees for mentors) for the two day workshop. This fee will be waived if you have any financial difficulty. Please indicate fee waiver request in the comment section of the form.
Google and REC will provide kits for the workshop and will have staff volunteers to support the teams throughout the event. The day will begin at 9 AM and will finish at 5 PM (tentative times). On day 2 the teams will use the robots that they build to compete against each other and win cool prizes!. Lunch will be provided, but you will have to make your own travel and hotel arrangements.
