My name is Chan Wei Kit (Jason) and I am a postgraduate research student at Sunway University Business School. I am undertaking this research to complete my Sunway-Lancaster Master of Business Administration (MBA) Dual Award Programme.

I am currently conducting a research study which will explore key factors influencing Malaysians’ acceptance of Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Home Technology for improving lifestyles. Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Home Technology is referring to the likes of interconnected home security system (eg: CCTV, Motion & Smoke detector), interconnected home energy management system (eg: air-condition, lighting, refrigerator, washing machine and other home appliances) and interconnected home entertainment system (eg: TV, sound system)

Research Study Title: Exploring key factors influencing Malaysians’ acceptance of Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Home Technology for improving lifestyles.

I would like to invite you to take part in this research study if:

• You are aged 18 years or older,
• You are Malaysians, and
• You either heard, noticed or even experienced in using IoT Smart Home Technology related devices / systems (eg: CCTV, home alarm system and etc) and understand its basic serving purpose and functionality.


Before you decide whether to take part I would like you to understand why the research is being done and what it would involve for you. Please take a few moments to read the following information carefully and take time to decide whether you wish to take part. What is the purpose of this research study?

The main purpose of this research study is to focus on exploring key factors influencing Malaysians’ acceptance of IoT Smart Home Technology for improving lifestyles. Your valuable input will help this research study to gain more insights about the impact of multiple dimensional factors in terms of psychological, sociological, environmental, technological and demographic aspects that influencing Malaysian consumers’ behaviour in accepting IoT Smart Home Technology.

Do participants have to take part?

Participation in this research study is entirely voluntary. Participants may withdraw at any point and participants need not give a reason. Participants continue participation in this research study should be as informed as any initial consent, so please feel free to ask for clarification, or further information via the email address at the start of this document.

What does this research study involve?

As a participant in this research study, you will be involved in answering a set of questionnaire that either sent out online or delivered in hard copy and returning the set of answered questionnaire thereafter to researcher, Chan Wei Kit (Jason)


How much time will this research study require participants to involve?

A set of questionnaire from this research study will be taking approximately from 15 to 20 minutes for participants to answer completely.

Will any incurred costs by participating in this research study?

The set of questionnaire will be preferably sent out online to minimize any possible incurred cost to participants during the process of participation. If online option is not feasible, hard copy delivery will be sent out by researcher to participants. Having said that, expenses such as internet data consumption, transportation, parking fee or other unforeseen cost  that might still incur to participants during the process of participating in the study will not be reimbursed by researcher to participants.

What are the possible benefits and risks from participating in this study?

There may be no personal benefit to participants from participating in this study and there is no financial incentive to do so. However, participants may find that this study offers an opportunity to provide some useful insights for researcher and relevant industry to understand key factors influencing Malaysian consumers in acceptance of IoT Smart Home Technology and these findings eventually could become a useful reference for the IoT Smart Home Technology device makers and system integrators to construct their strategy to expedite Malaysian consumers’ acceptance of IoT Smart Home Technology for improving lifestyles.
The risks related to this study are minimal. Participation in this study and any information participants share will be strictly confidential.



Will participants’ identity and information disclosed in this research study to be kept confidential?

Yes, the identity of participants and information provided in this research study will only be known to the researcher, Chan Wei Kit (Jason) and his research supervisor, Dr. Naser Valaei at Sunway University. Any information that is shared (such as in reports or publications) will be made anonymous. This means that details such as participants’ name (if there is any) or any identifiers will be removed. This will apply to any publications, presentations, or any discussion with other staffs in the University.

What will happen to the results of the study?

The result of this research study will be used to identify key factors that influencing Malaysians’ acceptance of IoT Smart Home Technology for improving lifestyles. The findings may be published in a scientific journal or presented at a conference. However, participants’ identity will remain anonymous in all publications and presentations of the findings.

What can I as a participant do if I have a complaint or a concern?

If you as a participant are not satisfied with the manner in which this research study is being conducted or if you have any concerns regarding your participation, you may contact (anonymously if you choose to do so):
