Collating knowledge of invasive and native terrestrial vertebrates on North American islands.
Overview:
Invasive alien species are a primary driver of biodiversity loss and species declines on islands. Fortunately, invasive alien species prevention, eradication, and control, are proven conservation approaches that have been applied on thousands of islands worldwide, with positive conservation benefit for native species. For example, following eradication of non-native black rats on Anacapa Island, non-native predation of Scripps’s Murrelets ceased and hatching success increased three-fold.

Since 2016, the US National Invasive Species Council (NISC) has been engaged with partners in Mexico, the USA, and Canada on the development of a North American Invasive Alien Species Strategy and Action Plan (NAIASSAP). To advance this effort, NISC contracted Island Conservation to collate data relevant to terrestrial invasive vertebrates on North American islands that host threatened native species. The outcomes of this project will be used to inform priorities under a North American Invasive Alien Species Strategy and Action Plan (NAIASSAP).

This survey seeks to collate expert knowledge of datasets that include invasive and native terrestrial vertebrate species on islands in North America (Mexico, USA, Canada, including territories). The results from this survey will inform a data strategy that cross-references existing datasets, addresses knowledge gaps, and considers a prioritization schema. Ultimately, we aim to fulfill a necessary step in developing priority actions for the prevention, control or eradication of terrestrial invasive vertebrates from North American island ecosystems.

To contribute to this effort, please complete the survey below  by 7th February 2018.
