S.A.I.L. Mentoring Program: Peer Leader Description & Expectations:
The S.A.I.L. (Sophomore Advanced Initiative for Leadership) Mentoring Program serves as an advanced leadership initiative sponsored by The Butler Center focused on mentorship, holistic advising, and personal connections. The S.A.I.L. Mentoring Program is the only comprehensive leadership and mentoring initiative at Colorado College for sophomore students. Juniors and senior students have the opportunity to serve as Peer Leaders in the S.A.I.L. Mentoring Program, where they are matched with a sophomore student for the year.
Benefits for Peer Leaders:
- Training in communication, time-management skills, mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and identity development
- Increased skills in the areas of: academics, career planning, cultural competency, financial decision-making, finding study abroad/internship opportunities, wellness, self-knowledge and communication
- Insight into the development of college students
- Leave a legacy of mentorship at CC
- The privilege of interacting with a sophomore student who is eager to learn and grow with you
Peer Leader Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the coordinators of the program and remain in contact throughout the year
- Attend all S.A.I.L. Mentoring Program meetings and functions
- Meet with your sophomore partner(s) a minimum of once each block for one hour
- Attend Peer Leader group meetings (or schedule 1:1 with a coordinator if unavailable)
- Act as a resource, guide, and role model
- Accept and relate to sophomores who may not share your lifestyle and values
- Respect the sophomores’ right to self-determination and independence
- Attend S.A.I.L. Orientations and an end-of-the-year celebration
- Encourage attendance at leadership development workshops
- Abide by college policies and maintain an appropriate and responsible relationship with sophomore(s)
*Consequences for not fulfilling duties as a Peer Leader can include: a meeting to assess what is going on and address any issues, which can be followed by implementing an improvement plan, and, if needed, ending a student’s role as a Peer Leader in the program.
Peer Leader Qualifications:
- Class standing as a junior or senior
- Dedication to personal growth and support of others
- Openness to cultural differences
- Good listening skills
- Sense of humor
- Strong academic standing (maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA during time as a Peer Leader)
Matching Process: Matches are made based on interests, skills, and backgrounds of sophomore students and Peer Leaders. Students can name someone they would like to be partnered with in the program and the coordinators will oversee the initial pairing and ongoing well-being of the match.
