How would wearable technology on professional tennis players affect fan engagement at Grand Slam tournaments?
You are being invited to take part in a research project, which looks at your views on how would wearable technology on professional tennis players affect fan engagement at Grand Slam tournaments. More specifically, the researcher looks at the affect on fan engagement if wearable technology on professional tennis players could obtain tennis player physiological data (Eg Heart rate, breathing rate) during tennis matches, of which data could be sent in real time to fans smartphone applications or TV broadcasters for fans to view. Therefore, the researcher is looking at the perceptions of wearable technology in professional tennis in a hypothetical situation. For example, would you be interested to know your favourite tennis player’s heart rate during match point at Wimbledon and would this knowledge make you feel more interested and engaged in the game? The wearable technology used could come in the form of a t-shirt, watch, a small patch or other types. Before you decide to participate, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and feel free to discuss it with others if you wish. If there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information, please ask the research team. The research team consists of Mr Peter Avis who is a member of the Department of Sport and Physical Activity at Bournemouth University. Please ask if you would like further information on the member of this research team.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH?

The purpose of this project is to understand how would wearable technology on professional tennis players affect fan engagement at Grand Slam Tournaments, if the physiological data (Eg Heart rate) obtained from the wearable device could be streamed to your smart phone if you were a fan in the audience, or to the TV screen for viewers watching at home on television. The findings of this research could provide a number benefits to sports fans and business’s.

WHY HAVE YOU BEEN CHOSEN?

We are exploring tennis fans that are aged 18 years or older and participate in online tennis forums. Because you fit these criteria, we are interested in your responses.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE PART?

WHAT WILL I NEED TO DO?

The questionnaire will take around 5 minutes to complete. You just need to tick boxes to answer questions or type in your answer in the text box for any open questions.

Your participation in this research is confidential. The data collected will remain anonymous and will be used in Mr Peter Avis’ final year dissertation. In any materials that are presented or published from this research, you will not be identified. To ensure confidentiality, your name will not appear in any work arising from this project. After the questionnaire is completed, the results will be stored on a password protected device. Only the researcher will have access to this file. This ensures the security of the data collected.
