SECTION A – The Research Project

This study is being used as a method of gathering secondary information for my dissertation topic titled “What effect does music have on the dramatic intent of a film?” that focuses specifically on tension and fear.
This questionnaire however, will purely focus on the types of horror films people watch and which are found to be the most effective in creating fear.
The study is consisted of 6 questions. 4 multiple choice and 2 short paragraph answers. The first 3 questions are to determine a base line of the participants susceptibility to horror films. It determines if they are “desensitised” to them by the genre of film they watch the most, how often they watch horror and how easily startled they feel they are. The final multiple choice question helps to establish which sub-genre of horror the participant prefers, which is important as different sub-genres will handle the scare factor differently. For example, comedy horror will dispel the tension with jokes. The final 2 questions are the most important and are open answers for the participant to enter whatever they want. The information given here is what will be closely examined and used in the rest of the dissertation project to discuss what the wider audience finds to be the most scary and effective at creating fear.
The survey will be created to be completed online and will only take approximately 5 minutes to complete. There will be 1 month for as many results as possible to be gathered via this survey.
Section B – Your Participation in the Research Project
The data collected from this survey will be anonymous and the information given through to the researcher will only be used for the purpose of the research and research alone. You do have the right to withdraw from the study at any point by just exiting the survey, only data from completed surveys will be sent on to the researcher.
As stated above the study should only take approximately 5 minutes and will be done via computer systems. You will be required to input answers for all questions throughout the survey, making sure all answers given are solely your own and honest opinion.
If you wish to take part in this study, you will be asked to sign a form declaring your consent.
