Hip Hop Hacktivist is a free hackathon targeting high school students that will take place at the Tumblr office on June 24th from 10am - 11:30pm. Our primary goal is to use the appeal and influence of the hip hop culture to introduce the tech industry and its opportunities to high school students belonging to minority and under-represented groups. We will use what they are familiar with to introduce them to something new.
The idea is to take a group of students who have no experience with programming and simply WOW them. At the core of our event we will group them in teams, assist them in brainstorming a tech idea, and allow them to see it get built right in front of their eyes. All this with assistance from various professional tech and design mentors. Students will also present their ideas and win prizes for the their creations. Along the way we will incorporate various hip hop themes and motifs in an attempt to speak their language and engage them. For instance, this upcoming hackathon is a Kendrick Lamar inspired event and the theme is "We Gon Be Alright", which is a popular line from his award winning song titled "Alright" that deeply resonates with the youth. Within the hook of that song Kendrick Lamar passionately raps, "looking at the world like where do we go", expressing the sentiment that a lot of people are in unfortunate circumstances and are in need of somewhere to turn to for social, economic, and medical resources. With those lyrics in mind, we are asking students to use the NYC Open Data Api
https://opendata.cityofnewyork.us/ to find a population that faces barriers and build an app that gives people access to a critical resource. For instance, one could build an app that helps high-school kids find, track, and verify volunteer work. Essentially we are asking students to create an app that gives those people "looking at the world like where do we go", a place to go.
We are currently reaching out to our extended tech community for support in making this event successful. Currently we are in need of a few tech and design mentors who can donate their time. Being a tech or design mentor means that you will directly interacting with the students and guiding them through the process of coming up with their app ideas and bringing those ideas to life. Below is a detailed overview of what each role entails.
