Immortal Machine - Steampunk dwarves with turn based (XCOM style) tactical combat against the necromantic cyborg armies
Dwarven steampunk theme set in a world where humanity has all but destroyed itself. Incapable of wielding magic, the humans embraced a sect of dwarvish philosophers who practiced a relatively obscure and esoteric craft called Science. Humanity took to the new way of thinking and over the course of a thousand years their technological prowess became undeniable. Eventually their cities and powers rivaled that of even the Elves, the supreme wielders of magic, shut away in their towers. On their journey for knowledge, the scientists of humanity began to look inward. Seeking a greater understanding of themselves they sought the secrets of immortality. As the power of each nation's great minds grew, so to did their capacity for malevolence. They had effectively doubled lifespans by the time they first reanimated skeletal bodies. Flesh came next and finally cybernetic implants. The dwarves, slow and stoic in their development of technology, watched on in horror as the human nations destroyed their own civilization in war and the totalitarian leaders' macabre experiments that transformed men and women into mindless killing machines. After the war that became known as Humanity's Final 200 Years, there emerged only 5 immortal necromantic scientist rulers and their chosen acolytes. The dwarves, slowly at first and then all at once, became involved in a war on the frontiers of their mountainous traditional lands. Justified as a defensive struggle against unspeakable evil, the dwarves found the great rewards of pillaging the dead husk of human territory incentive enough to raid and war with the necromancer overlords. Our story is of a small legion of dwarves, sent on a mission into human lands.
