Japanese Studies 30-Year Anniversary: February 21, 2018
Japanese Studies at UC San Diego welcomes its 30th Anniversary of the program in 2017-18 academic year. Our program started in 1987. Since then, it has occupied an unique and innovative position in the United States. Our focus has been on situating the study of Japan within theoretical, interdisciplinary, and transnational scholarship rather than a traditional area studies framework.  Growing out of a small language program, we currently have more than 1,000 students who are eager to learn Japanese language and culture.

This one-day event “JPN STS UCSD 1987→” celebrates the tremendous success of our program during the last 30 years and the vigorous continuation of its contribution to creating outstanding scholars, strong professionals, and better citizens for an increasingly complex interconnected world.
