Performance Monitoring and Verification
The recently established GÉANT PMV SIG (SIG-PMV) is seeing to investigate performance monitoring and verification topics from both a research and operations perspective, towards identifying and establishing best practises for a wide range of scenarios. SIG-PMV activities are open to all interested parties within the GÉANT community (NRENs, universities, research organisations, etc) and any collaborating international organisations, e.g. ESnet, Internet2, and other user communities etc.

At present there is a wide range of PMV tools available, and their usage varies between communities, based on the requirements, levels of knowledge, and other factors. Examples include use of open source tools such as iperf, commercial tools integrated into vendor platforms, bespoke packages such as perfSONAR, and ‘lightweight’ community initiatives such as the RIPE Atlas project. New work is also emerging in areas such as crowdsourced wireless performance monitoring.

The aim of this survey is to get a high-level "feel" about current practices in the GÉANT, NREN and campus communities, to extract the underlying requirements for (network) performance measurement and verification, and how such tools might be used for strategic purposes, such as network architecture design, capacity management or improving end-user experience.

The Survey is divided into the following sections: Role / Affiliation (3 Questions) / PMV Framework integration (3 Questions) / PMV - Your measurement activities (12 Questions)/ PMV - Verification (6 Questions) / PMV - Future (6 Questions)  / PMV - Miscellaneous (2 Questions).

If you have any queries or comments about this survey, please do not hesitate to contact the SC of SIG-PMV
