Notre Dame School of Manhattan Saturday Academy, funded by a generous grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is a tuition-free enrichment program offered to students in grades 7-12. The Academy will be held on four Saturday mornings, beginning on October 19th and running through November 9th. The Academy is scheduled from 9 am until Noon on Saturday mornings. Students will receive two 10 minute breaks. Students who participate in the Academy will have the opportunity to study selected topics in American Studies by analyzing primary sources, videos, slides and music and participate in test preparation for the SAT: Reading, Literature and Essay, AP US History exam and New York State regents exam in US History. All instruction will be based on the materials supplied by the teacher. There will be no homework in these courses. Upon satisfactory completion of the semester, the Academy will send a Certificate of Achievement to the students school. Please complete the following application for enrollment into the program. You will receive an email confirmation of your enrollment along with a parental permission slip.

FALL 2019 COURSE OFFERINGS

Crack the SAT: Reading, Language and Essay (11th and 12th ONLY)

This course will prepare students to take the Reading, Writing and Language and Essay sections of the SAT Exam.

Crack the SAT: MATH (11th and 12th ONLY)

This course will prepare students to take the math sections of the SAT Exam.


American History Through Broadway

This course will explore the great American musicals such as  Hamilton, 1776, Little Women and others and the story presented in it through the historical context and match fact from fiction. Students will recreate scenes and songs and will produce their own that reflect the historical record. Students will learn about the life and history of the country through the lense of some of the most famous Broadway smash hits and learn why these stories have become such phenomenons.

CRACK THE AP US HISTORY EXAM (11th ONLY)

This course is designed to prepare students for the APUSH exam given by the College Board in May. By utilizing the Gilder Lehrman AP US History Study Guide and other resources, students will be encouraged to think like a historian. Practically, they will become familiar with the three components of the subject that shape the exam: (1) historical thinking skills, (2) thematic analysis, and (3) the concepts and understandings of the nine periods that organize the content. Students will work in groups and individually to practice answering multiple choice questions, short answers questions, document-based questions and the long essay. All of this will be done in an encouraging, collegial atmosphere with plenty of discussion and debate.

Protests in America

This course will look at the different protest movements through US history and take a look the women's rights, civil rights, anti-war protests and LGBTQIA rights movements through today through the lense of literature and the 1st Amendment right to protest. The course will look at protest literature like books, essays, poems and songs that have had an important impact on the rights movements over US history. From Rosa Parks to Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique to Martin Luther King Jr and the 1960s anti-war songs this course will explore the literature of protest movements as part of American's history beginning with "No Taxation Without Representation" and Common Sense by Thomas Paine and the origin of the 1st Amendment.
