Wayne Rooney is coming out of international retirement for England's clash with USA

Gareth Southgate’s side will be running out for the first time since their stunning 3-2 win away at Spain in the UEFA Nations League last month.

Yet, Thursday’s meeting with USA is all about the return of one man.

Wayne Rooney is coming out of international retirement for one game only in order to bid farewell to the Three Lions.

The 33-year-old, England’s record goalscorer, last featured for his country against Scotland in November 2016.

Thursday’s game is now called ’The Wayne Rooney Foundation international’, with money going to the striker’s charity.

Rooney will come on as a second-half substitute, but will not captain the side nor wear the number 10 shirt.

The DC United man told his club’s website: “I don’t know how much I’m going to play.

“I'll speak to Gareth Southgate and whatever he wants me to play I'm happy to. It's Gareth's call.”
