Hot 100 Wines 2017/18 – The Complete List

Shaw + Smith’s 2016 Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills nabbed top spot at the end of it, with a Taylors 2017 Tempranillo from Clare Valley/McLaren Vale and Jericho 2017 Rosé also from the Hills nipping at its heels.

Outside of the top 10, 10 wineries this year made multiple entries into the overall field. Leconfield, in particular, whose 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot ranked number 7 has three more red wines in the Hot 100. Shingleback’s 2015 Davey Estate Reserve Shiraz placed at number 10 in the top 10, and the winery also squeezed two more reds into the overall 100.

From there, eight wineries had two wines each in the whole 100. Jericho’s Rosé made number three, with their 2016 Fiano also slipping in, while Fox Creek, Hahndorf Hill Winery, Rock of Wisdom, Ochota Barrels, Altze’s Corner, Hither & Yon and Mitolo Wines all got two bottles in outside of the top 10.

With new Head Judge Peter Dredge leading a pack of wine boffins from diverse fields, this year’s Hot 100 Wines took on a new flavour. Outside of the traditional top 10 wines, Dredge has narrowed the wine categories from 11 down to seven: Sparkling, Light Aromatic Wines, Whites with Texture, Orange and Rosé, Fruit Forward Reds, Structural and Savoury Reds, Reds with Power and Presence, plus Vermouth, Dessert and Fortifieds.
