Playstation 5 Won’t Launch Until 2020: Report

It’s been almost 5 years since Sony’s PlayStation 4 came out and as the days pass, the internet is getting more and more excited about “PlayStation 5” (or whatever Sony decides to call it later on). According to some rumors, it should release at the end of this year.

Kotaku believes otherwise and says that a new PlayStation is still “a ways off” and will not arrive this year; Sony might launch it as late as 2020. Its launch date is highly uncertain and depending on its competitor’s behavior, Sony might decide to release it earlier than anticipated. A person familiar with Sony’s plan said,

On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward. At some point, Sony’s probably looked at every possible date. It’s all about what they think is the best sweet spot in terms of hardware.

Previously, PS4 was launched 7 seven years after PS3 did and almost a year before Xbox One did, their decision might change depending on when Microsoft launches the next Xbox.

Coming Fall 2018?

This month, a tech blog called SemiAccurate – which specializes in leaking products ahead of their launch – posted an article which suggested that PS5 development kits have already been supplied to game devs and that it should be coming this year.

They leaked some specifications too, saying that PS5 will have a built-in VR function and will be based on AMD’s Navi architecture working in tandem with a custom Zen CPU.

According to people familiar with the matter, PS5 needs to be under production right now for it to be launched at the end of this year.

Another important bit is that noted devs are already developing games for the PS4 which will launch at the end of this year, if PS5 was coming, they would develop games for it instead.

How Devkits Work

As for “PS5 devkits”, even if they really were provided by the company to game developers, it does not really mean anything because a devkit is a software module containing all the necessary tools and debug tools to develop something for a particular platform.

These modules can easily be run on any computer, a desktop perhaps running any kind of CPU and GPU. A source said,

[An early devkit] is a literal desktop tower—it doesn’t look like anything. First devkits are almost always that. They might have a custom motherboard or might literally be a PC. You want to get one or two of those out to the lead graphics programmer [of a studio] so they can see what’s possible, start planning what they can do in their game based on that. That’s early devkit stuff.

The info available on this matter is too limited to believe that PS5’s release is close. Even sources from Sony confirmed that there was no “new” console in production so far. External sources, such as game developers and design studios have not heard anything related to any new console, both PS5, and the new “Xbox Two”.

For now, a 2020 release is expected and PS5 will have beefed up hardware capable of running extremely resource intensive games.
